Reefer Madness is Dangerous
Oct 11, 2008 - 7:37 PM - by Ganjarden
In a letter to a local paper (The Daily Star - Oneonta, NY. October 8 ) entitled, "Marijuana use is harmful," anti-cannibis crusader, Miriam Brown, claims that, "Marijuana can lead to addiction, anti-social behavior and health problems'' -- yet she does not cite a single peer-reviewed study proving any serious detrimental effects for the vast majority of individuals who use marijuana. She doesn't because those studies don't exist.

A 1999 study by the National Academy of Sciences concluded that, "Few marijuana users develop dependence." Some do, "but they appear to be less likely to do so than users of other drugs (including alcohol and nicotine) and marijuana dependence appears to be... [Read More]

Massachusetts District Attorneys: Facts: We Don't Need No Stinking Facts
Oct 11, 2008 - 7:24 PM - by Ganjarden
In November the voters of Massachusetts will face Ballot Question 2, an initiative petition that seeks to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Predictably, the eleven Massachusetts District Attorneys, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police and Massachusetts Sheriffs unanimously oppose this measure by echoing the hackneyed mantra, "what kind of message does this send our children," and citing bogus studies.

For example, in a recent story the North Shore Sunday (Beverly, MA) reported Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's claim that "the only real data about marijuana and its link to other drugs comes from a 15-year-old study from the Columbia Center... [Read More]

Laws Gone to Pot
Oct 11, 2008 - 5:17 AM - by Ganjarden
A report on marijuana written by a team of world experts suggests countries interested in more rational cannabis laws simply ignore drug treaties and go their own way.

“Control regimes that criminalize users are intrusive on privacy, socially divisive and expensive. Thus, it is worth considering alternatives,” says the Global Cannabis Commission Report presented in the British House of Lords last week.

The 170-page paper offers a range of options for countries brave enough to move away from the prohibitionist approach to pot — the most widely used illegal drug in the world and one of the least dangerous substances used recreationally.

The status quo is not an option, the authors... [Read More]

Cannabidiol: From an Inactive Cannabinoid to a Drug With Wide Spectrum of Action
Oct 11, 2008 - 4:56 AM - by Ganjarden
In the tip of secreting hairs located mainly on female-plant flowers and, in a smaller amount, in the leaves of cannabis plant, there are resin glands that have a considerable amount of chemically related active compounds, called cannabinoids. In some varieties of cannabis the main cannabinoid is the psychoactive component of the plant, delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta9-THC). Cannabis varieties typically bred for fiber are nearly always relatively low in delta9-THC, cannabidiol (CBD) being the predominant cannabinoid in these plants.1

Although CBD was isolated from marijuana extract in 1940 by Adams et al.,2 for almost 25 years no further work has been reported, except for a few early works about its isolation.... [Read More]

The Drug Czar’s Report Card: F
Oct 11, 2008 - 1:48 AM - by Ganjarden
In 2002, the Bush administration’s National Drug Control Strategy set a goal of reducing illegal drug use by 25 percent in five years. This was followed by an unprecedented campaign of persuasion (more than 100 different anti-drug advertisements and commercials) and law enforcement as the number of annual arrests for marijuana possession climbed above 700,000 — higher than ever before, and greater than the combined total for all violent crimes.

Now that the first five years’ results are available, the campaign can officially be called a failure, according to an analysis of federal drug-use surveys by Jon Gettman, a senior fellow at the George Mason University School of Public Policy. The prevalence of marijuana... [Read More]

Belgian Paper Says Dutch Cannabis Growers Moving Inland
Oct 10, 2008 - 4:29 PM - by Ganjarden
Brussels -Dutch criminals are setting up cannabis farms ever deeper into Flanders. They are trying in that way to reduce the chance of being caught.

The police are discovering more and more cannabis farms in our country. Last year, 480 farms were dismantled; a doubling compared with 2006 and nearly 10 times more than in 2004. "There are more farms, and we are searching better," so Michel Willekens, chief inspector of the Central Drugs Service with the federal police, the staggering increase.

The Flemish borderland with the Netherlands is still the area of activity par excellence. The judicial district of Tongeren beats them all with 101 farms, followed by Antwerp (50), Turnhout (47),... [Read More]

Progressive Voter Guide to Drug Issues
Oct 10, 2008 - 3:12 PM - by Ganjarden
Twelve states now have medical marijuana laws on the rolls, and hardly a week goes by without the announcement of a medical study touting the healing effects of cannabis. Yet the drug war in the United States keeps on rolling: More than 870,000 people were arrested on charges relating to marijuana last year, and Congress approves larger budgets each year for the White House drug czar.

What can we expect from Obama on drug issues if he's elected? "Bottom line," marijuana policy expert Paul Armentano recently wrote, "no administration since Jimmy Carter's has proactively taken steps to liberalize federal drug penalties, and there's little indication that Obama and Biden will possess either the desire... No More Medical Marijuana On The Central Coast
Oct 10, 2008 - 10:06 AM - by User
Several medical marijuana dispensaries in Santa Barbara closed their doors Sept. 19 in response to pressure by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Dispensaries are allowed in certain circumstances under California law to provide marijuana to patients with a doctor's recommendation, but the federal government considers them to be in conflict with federal laws restricting drug trafficking. According to a DEA representative, several letters were sent out to property owners in late July informing them of ongoing illegal activity on their properties-specifically, the selling of marijuana. They further threatened to seize the properties if the dispensaries were not closed by Sept. 19.

Best Buds
Oct 10, 2008 - 2:11 AM - by Ganjarden
Cheech Marin answers the phone at a Ritz-Carlton hotel room in Florida, where he is booked under the name Dick Gozinya. He chuckles mischievously when told that asking the front desk clerk to be connected to his pseudonym’s room was a little awkward. He may now be a world-class Chicano art collector and respected actor, but he clearly hasn’t lost his crass sense of humor.

Two days later, while appearing with partner Tommy Chong during the first of two shows at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, Cheech confirmed that his humor is still as delightfully ribald as ever. The two are in the midst of their first national tour together in more than a quarter-century, and Cheech proclaimed his enjoyment at being onstage... [Read More]
