Hey 420's,
I made some cannabutter using clarified butter ghee and it works great, but I want my batch to last a long time so I put most of it in the freezer. If I know I want to use some soon I'll put some in the fridge and then let it sit out on the counter for a few hours because it gets too hard from being in the fridge to actually spread on some toast. My question is will continually thawing it out and putting it back in the fridge or freezer have any adverse affects on the strength of the cbutter? If anyone has experience with this I'd love to know because I don't have enough knowledge about what happens chemically when the butter gets thawed and refrozen, etc... to know if what I'm doing might be diluting the batch's strength. Thanks! |

That's a good question... I think most foods don't react well to thawing and refreezing. Any way you can maybe freeze individual amounts?

The most important thing to consider with storing cannabutter is to realize 3 main enemies to potency. In order of seriousness - light, air and moisture weaken the potency dramatically if not controlled.
Cannabutter freezes very well and the best way to keep it fresh (hopefully you covered the pot when you made the butter) is to mash the butter into ice cube trays. Ice cube tray measure 1/4 cup in volume so it also helps you determine measurements when you freeze them and to use it later. If a recipe calls for 1/2 cannabutter, just pop two cubes out of the tray and you're good. As for freezing and refreezing, as long as you stored the butter in an airtight, vacuumed container that also protects against light, the potency should be still the same. If you're storing it for more than 3 weeks, use a freezer wrap. Whenever you want to use the butter, take out the amount you need and thaw it for couple of hours in a dark place. This process will keep the potency at a decent level as long as you maintain your butter correctly in your freezer. |

i always freeze mine. then chip off the water that forms on top when it freezes, because when you freeze it. the thc and butter is at the bottom cuz its more dense than water. that way you can have a more potent cannabutter.
