bats vs. chillums.

So what is the difference... is there one?... or r they just different terms referencing the same thing in different areas?...

I've always assumed used the terms interchangeably. Even if there is a difference, most people probably don't know it. Interested to see the pictures anyways though.

I always thought a chillum was held between your index and middle finger, held straight up while making a loose fist. You pull your hit through your fist. True? Thats how I was shown anyway.. . this was years ago from this guy, Isiah. Really old popular artist from Phila. aaa I tell ya about him in another thread. anyway, and a bat was just a straight shooter. I've owned chillums, but never a bat.

^^yea, that's how it is around here too, bagzgroove. i didn't want to take the time to explain that, cuz i'm lazy...but yea, i was taught to pull hits through your fist as well

^^you don't actually need to, the fist thing was a tradition of some indian potsmoking religion. If your mouth touched the chillum people flipped out.

chilliums...are well what is pictured above several times...a bit is usualy refered to as a one hitter small and compact.. atleast thats what i think

As a glassblower I'd say the peice above from kevin nail is a chillum, because of the part where you can hold it with your hand, and cause its a push bowl. The thing cherry posted is a bat cause its straight without the knob by the mouthpeice to hold it and its got a constriction bowl. (its pinched down to make the bowl).

I prefered bats when I still puffed cause they seem to make your stuff burn longer.

Art Glass Pipes > Bears Peice - Glass Pipes.org Heres a push bowl chillum, a hole is popped then the bowl is pushed with cone shaped carbon rod.

The first 3 to the left are constriction bats. Notice the single wall bowls that are constricted down and popped open at the top.

Not to get techy but I notice these differences mainly just to be clear about what people want when talking to shops.

I remember using chillums way back in the 60's/70's... made from reddish brown clay .. still see them now and then. Used them exactly the way you described Mr Bagz.

Hey,way back when I first found out about chillims this real cool
hippy chic taught me to hold it completely differnt.I remeber going
to camp Creek one year ,and no one there had ever seen it done
like that before.

bats and chillums are the same, but youll find what people traditionally call a chillum would be made of stone or marble and presumably larger than your average glass or metal bat. I hit all bats like chillums is why i say this. Thers also a chubbler.

I have always referred to a bat as a small chillum SHAPED pipe with a small chamber and a screw-on top, where as a chillum, regardless of material, usually has an open conical bowl at the top. I have several glass ones which I take with me everywhere because of ease of use and size as compared to a pipe.
