Smoking on Probation

I caught a felony possession charge and did not have a card at the time. I did my time and am now on f. probation. I met a friend who had a card before he was convicted and put on probation and was allowed to keep using. Would me getting a card after being convicted matter? He told me I just need to tell my probation officer and he should have to comply once I have my card. Is this correct? Anything else I should know on this matter?
