We are trying to keep things real here and accurate so I feel the need to correct things so that new growers aren't misled. If I could edit your title to reflect the truth I would. You do not have 790 watts of light! You have 164watts. Period! It does not matter that the light output from these floros equals the light output from 790watts of incandescent lighting. 1st We do not use incandescent lights to begin with. 2nd we only add the actual wattage of any bulb. If it uses 15 watts then it's a 15 watt bulb. To say anything else is not the truth and could mislead newer growers. I myself don't want to spend the next year or so trying to tell new growers that their wattage isn't even close to what they think it is and have them pointing to your thread for the source of their info.
I'm sorry if this upsets you. It's not my intention. My intention is to make sure any and all growers. New or old. Understands that the wattage a light uses is the wattage it is. Not what it's suppose to be "equal too".

Re: 790W CFL lighting rig

Lol budcultre, its all good dude :-) gave me something to read this morning over my morning coffee That's a s**tload of cfls in what you described! I didn't even know you could get 150s he he he. I like the mailbox idea, recycling, keeping costs down ;-) Where did you come up with the name "franken fixture"? I'm curious lol

Peace bro

edit for racefan: No problem dude, I totally understand. Can I edit my original post and change the title? I'll give it a shot anyway. Failing that I'll send a PM to one of the mods and see if they can help me out. Thank you for bringing this to my attention :-)

Re: 164w CFL lighting rig

Sorry about that RF. I should have described them by their actual wattage, which is 42w for the "150w", 30w for the "120w" and 23w for the "100w" cfl's. My bad.

Yeah Stony, way back when I was a kid we didn't have much money so I built my bike out of mis-matched parts I'd find in the trash. Since it was cobbled together, someone called it a "Frankenstein bike". So I started calling it "Frankenbike", then anything homebuilt and kind of ugly can be "franken_____". Frankenbike, frankenguitar, frankencar...lol...jes being stoopid really

Peace

Re: 164w CFL lighting rig

Seeing alot of CFLs around lately, not bad I suppose. As you seem to know what your doing with them, and thats what counts.

Stony,

+rep points man (if only I can find out how to assign them), awesome. Can I just say to the forum: quick response, informative and more than willing to help out a fellow board member. Outstanding.

Re: 164w CFL lighting rig

Wow, thank you Wyld :-) I try, lol

SG yeah they aren't bad. It was boss's poor mans grow that inspired my whole fascination with CFLs :-P
I would really like to continue to use them in the future when I'm running a HPS system but only as supplemental lighting, like in DrKrans indoor grow.

Lumens is the important thing here I think. A 400 HID can output about 29000 constan. One 32 watt CFL puts out about 1600 lumens. I like CFLs as Support Lights. If you are gonna use them like main grow lights, try keeping them as close as you can without burning your plants

Good job so far.

Re: 307w CFL lighting rig

Oh did I mis-calculate my actual wattage there boss mate?

edit: ps, I will try and keep discussions on topic from now on ==>> referring to my 2nd Grow Journal

re-edit: Boss I think my actual wattage IS 164w, not 307w.. although 307 sounds much nicer

Re: 307w CFL lighting rig

CFL Lighting:

2x 23watt - 4100k Cool Day Light Lamps
4x 18watt - 2700k Warm White Lamps
2x 23watt - Warm Whites (threw away most of the box they came in)

edit: doesn't sound like a lot of light at all really :(

Re: 164w CFL lighting rig

I've have been playing around a lot with CFLs. What I like about them is the amount of lumen x watt and they are not very hot. Getting a high lumen output is essential. Dont get me wrong HIDs have the Highest lumen output but I love the extra lumen in her face.

And remember: intensity = light output devided by square distance

Now do the math and tell me your lumen output =)
