Starting Out - One Strawberry Something or Other

Howdy folks. Been reading loads on here these past few weeks and have tried to put some of it into practice with this wee lady.....

Day 1 - a mate gave me a rooted cutting which he described as "strawberries and cream" so I put it under a 600W HPS with Ionic Hydro Grow and one of their grow supplements in a 20L NFT tank:

Day 7 of veg - I noticed the leaf edge curling, did some reading, though it might be a bit heat stress so got a thermometer in there and started monitoring temps.

Day 14 of veg - Temp had been getting up to near 30 so I made a big hole in the grow room above the light to let hot air rise out and added more vents lower down. Didn't seem to do much for the leave curling but I was happier with light on temps of about 25 and lights off around 20 and she seemed to be doing well so I stopped worrying about it.

Day 21 of veg - topped and a few other cuttings taken from lower down by this point. Cuttings placed in a cupboard in a make-shift propagator in rockwool cubes and under a 125w CFL.

Day 28 (of 30) of veg - more cuttings taken and placed in a shop bought propagator under the CFL. Some screen construction work starting to be thought about too.

Day 5 of bud - 600w HPS now on 12/12 as I was worried it'll get too tall if it stretches a lot. Screen constructed and starting to think about training (nobody tell the Mrs a DIY project got finished in under a year!) .Clones still not doing a lot.

Day 9 of bud - been gradually spreading bud sites around the screen hoping to end up with what I hope will be the best colas under the best light. Screen seem to filling up nicely but probably not as neat as it could be if I had started training sooner.

That's as far as I've got so far.....look forward to your comments and advice.

Still not sure what strain it is though.....my guess is strawberry kush but have a while to wait until I can find out if it does indeed taste of strawberries. Any other ideas for what it could be?

:thanks:

Hi Kushtie, thought I'd pop in and tag along for the ride.... things are looking good and healthy my friend, well done :) Is the your first grow with NFT and how are you finding things?

Cheers bud. Glad to have you watching over:thanks:

Have dabbled a little with growing in the past.....1st time is probably getting on for about 15 years ago with some seeds collect from buds I'd bought over the years (maybe Thai or whatever it was that was tied to a stick with thread and was usually full of seeds). Pretty sure that one was in soil in pots in a cardboard box lined with tin foil, household CFLs and some miraclegrow. Result was a carrier bag full of popcorn. 2nd time I can't really remember much about.....had a loan of a proper growlight of some sort and nutes in bottles but have no idea what I grew or what it was in. Result I think was a couple of ounces of wee nugs.

Last time I grew, about a year ago, I had the NFT tank, 125W CFL and a fan to start with. The plants I got (1x Mazar and 1x Dutch Haze) had unfortunately been pulled off a mate's NFT mat after they had started vegging under his 600W and suffered what I now suspect was a fair bit of damage to the roots. Sticking them in a cold, open loft with nothing but a 125W CFL for comfort didn't seem to do them any favours either so as quick as I could I built a grow room around them and bought myself a 600W HPS light. I messed up a little underfeeding them at one point, then at another time over filled the res so the water level was up covering the tray and roots. Top of one of them got a little singed at one point too. Result was 3 ounces of bud off the Mazar which I enjoyed thoroughly and 4 ounces off the Dutch Haze a few weeks later which was a nice enough smoke but the buds were a bit light and fluffy.

This time I'm hoping for 7 ounces off the one plant and buds you could smash a window with :)

very nice . great pics also , check your temps at the top of canopy they still look a little warm :) i made the mistake having the temp gauge on the wall , now i try to have it where the highest buds are , i was 5 degrees warmer at the canopy

love them pictures man , what camera did you use out of interest ?:thumb:

good luck

Thanks. Stuck the temp probe up at canopy level when the light was off earlier. ..got as low as 20.0 and just nipped up to check again with light on and got 28.4.

I moved the light up a couple of inches so it's about as high as I can get it and will adjust the fan later to see if that helps cool things down.

Will return with camera details and more pics in a bit....got a buddy in who needs a cuppa and an arse whupping on the playstation :)

Hope this answers the camera question Paddy......

....the lens and the flash round it are fairly specialised bits of kit. Any Canon DSLR will do, that's just my newest one. (and it's not the mk2 version which I'd now like)

Aye, conditions are hopefully a bit more sorted now and I've got a reasonable grasp of at least some of the basics so I can start to fine tune and improve things as I go.

A slightly wider shot of the space I made within my loft for growing so you can see more of what I'm working with space wise....

I could make a bigger space if I had to but that leaves me space for other stuff I like having up there and I haven't maxed out what I can grow in there yet.

Some of the bigger buds....

Think this one might be the biggest.....

And this one the one with the most white stuff on it......

My big girl is still doing fine, I think?.....

Must have got a bit muddled with day counts before though....above taken 15 days into 12/12. Must have been 28 days of veg rather than 30 it got.

Clones still not doing a lot although I've been trying leave them alone other than keeping the cover on the propagator and cuttings misted with a bottle of spray water with a couple of drops of Ionic Greenfuse Root and Hydro Grow in it. Started with 16 about a month ago, 2 dead and removed already, another few gone mostly yellow and a few still looking pretty green with the rest somewhere in between. Think I'll leave a few more days before checking for any sign of roots again.

And a few pics of what I'm smoking until I get my crop down......

Mothers Finest grown by a mate but this is just some of the pre-harvest popcorn he's had drying for the best part of a week:

Hopefully there will be a few more cloudy and amber trichomes on the rest of the plant now. He was feeling too rough to harvest it yesterday! :)

And some of my regular bought stuff.....some sort of Cheese I believe:

I can't really complain as it's a nice enough smoke and a pretty heavy stone but I'm looking forward to having more variety to choose from rather than smoking the same old cheese pretty much all the time.

Very very nice bro I like your choice of light and scrog keep up the good work she was real healthy I hope you start more grows

Cheers bud. Got the 600W and ballast from a local shop for £60. I'd like a bigger reflector and a fancy digital ballast but also like the look of some of those LED panels too so am following a number of grows on here to see how they go. No rush :)

The main purpose of the screen was to try to spread the plant out for better light penetration and hopefully support some nice heavy buds a bit later on. I'd seen screens getting used on here and the plant seemed to lend itself better to a screen than trying to tie individual branches like I've done in the past. Can't say it was part of the plan at the start or that I knew the plant was going to get that bushy.....the plant decided :)

It will be ez to tell later in flower but like I said its great eirther way they are both great strains. Good luck with the rest of your grow bro.

Around 2.5 weeks into budding now. Stretching seems to have slowed and the last few days the biggest change I've noticed is the size and number of pistils increasing.

One from below looking up....it's like a jungle down there :D
day-46-under.jpg

And I tried getting in there with my big camera and a tripod but there's not enough room to work in so didn't manage to get much.
