my germination technique is this dude:
acquire seeds. germinate by simply using red plastic 'solo' cups (20 oz.) with 5 nail holes in the bottom filled all the way up with dirt. place your seed directly in the center of the cup and push it into the soil just a little bit...less than a fingernail length. add a dash of dirt to cover the seed, water with 1/2 cup of water per seed, stick the cups under the sink, and check them 4 days later. if i were in your position, this is what i would try to do with your space/lighting. mount all your lights above the plants, but keep them adjustable. stick the newborns under 24 hour light (from above only for now) for about 2 weeks, switch to 12/12 for as long as it takes to start seeing gender. NO NUTRIENTS USED UP UNTIL THIS POINT immediately put your best looking female(s) back to vegetative state by changing your light timing to at least 18 hours of light, transplant to a 2-3 gallon container, and veg until you can start taking clones. once you have clones that are 2 weeks old and healthy, get some netting suitable for the SCoG technique mounted at 15"-17" above soil level, veg for 20-30 days while training your clones through the screen, and flower again 12/12 light cycle until it's time to harvest, trimming fan leaves as you see fit, or you can just rely on SCoG FAQs. given the small space you have to work with, and reading a bunch of journals and faq's on here, I think this to be a superior method of achieving the most weight for your space, without the hassle of LST'ing your little ones. i was stoned as shit while i wrote this so please feel free to correct me if i missed something, or am just plain wrong.

I'm really not looking to do clones, or anything advanced this time around. my structure is temporary, and i'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. I've never even seen a full grown plant in real life. I just want to grow mine normally, no real tricks. just so that I can get the basics down. everyone keeps giving me awesome, yet advanced advice, haha. I am gonna switch to 12/12 from 19/5 once the plants get ~ 8" high so i know the gender. hopefully i can find that out before the end of Feb, cuz I'm going away for the first week of March and I just kinda want to water really well, and then walk away for a week and allow to grow, like they were outside... we'll see

If you make 1/3 of your soil mix coco coir, you should be able to use a drip system while you are gone without drowning them. That's my plan when I go to Europe this spring. I am going to test it before I trust it though....

i haven't heard of the "drip system", anyone care to explain? The only hands off watering system I know of and might be able to do is a wick system

Okay, so a bunch of you have been clamoring for new pix of the grow. I officially tossed #1 cuz there was nearly no progress, even in germination. I probably screwed it up, or it wasn't strong enough to begin with. either way, the weaklings get cut. So now I have 2 and 3 growing steadily under the one 2700 lumen light that bends down from the top (look at overall grow closet in earlier pix). Everything seems to be going fine, so now I just gotta wait a little while until the first real leaves really expand. they're there now, just really small. I'll update with pix again when they are expanded.

Drip systems come in many forms, but they basically just drip a little water on the soil drop by drop. They can even be put on a digital timer so they only come on for a minute or two every hour, depending on what the plants actually need.

I don't have an exact date set, but that's probably fairly close to when I'll be ready to throw mine 12/12. My biggest plant is taking off like a rocket. Might be even sooner than I expected.

whats up fox! congarats on the grow. i started from the beginning and it looks like your gettin er dun, but not all lumens are created equall. cfl's are energy effecient but the 'lux' or briteness drops off at about 4-6" thats why you can look directly at them from a close distance. you have to keep them super close to the plant for good results. hid's like mh/hps have a penetrating output that will burn its image on your retina from 15-20' away. also w/cfl's you have to take in to consideration plant height when calc. lumens psf. 2000 lum.per sqft is a good minimum for an hid or cfl grow but since distance is key w/cfl it is 4000 lum per cuft once your plant hits 12" since light at the top isnt hittin the bottom you have to light the top and sides. thats why LST is good for cfl cause you can bend your plant down and runnit along all the lights instead of under just one and allowing the bottom flowers acces to light and giving them room to go up and bud. LST'n aint hard, but its necessary. check out my completed thread in my sign.line it has pics of 3 lst'd plants and one that was not from my 1st grow. also theres examples of cfl proximity and ventilation and of course, what you get in the end. good luck and big yields!!!
+rep for being a grower

UPDATE: the lil.... well i don't know the sex, but let's hope girls!.... are doing great! they are past where my last plant died, so this is officially new area to me! no real need for pix, i'm gonna wait till the secondary leaves come in. I mean the three-leaf leaves. I'll probably switch to 12/12 around the 23rd or 24th. How long does it take to see signs of sex after switching to 12/12? usually? I am gonna be gone the entire first week of March, so i don't want male balls busting all over my pretty girl... assuming one might be male (hope not! heaven forbid both).
Anyways, has anyone seen that CNBC special called "Marijuana Inc"?? It's interesting, but I HATE how the Bush Drug Czar says that people are growing "poison"!!!! How the hell can he call marijuana poison when it helps so many people!?!? that stuff pisses me off to no end. such ignorance. It sucks that we are a species that is so subject to brain washing/social conditioning. Most people never take it upon themselves to find the truth. They would rather just listen to shit they're told to listen to. Okay, off my soap box... Pix when they grow a bit more.
