14 years - Marijuana Conspiracy

My name is Robert Emmett Towey. I am better known by the Bureau of Prisons as 06720-041. I am 34 years old. One decade removed from society.

On October 12, 1994 I was a 24 years old; I was a drug addict, and at the apex of addiction. On this day I was arrested on a reverse sting. I had been fronted 50lbs of marijuana from an acquaintance that was cooperating with federal agencies.
On February 2, 1995 I was found guilty by a jury on three counts: attempt to posses with intent to distribute 50lbs of marijuana; use of a firearm in relation to a drug offense; and conspiracy to distribute 100 kilos of marijuana.

On April 19,1995 I was sentenced to 168 months; 5 year statutory maximum, 5-year mandatory minimum, and 9 years based on testimony.

I am not claiming innocence. I had been hustling drugs as long as I had been using them, since the age of 13. I went to trial because I believed that I was not guilty as charged. I could not have broken the law without the assistance of the police and their snitch. I purchased the gun legally and it had no relationship to the crime, therefore the firearm-sentencing enhancement should not apply. And the conspiracy, it was based on testimony in return for a reduced sentence for my acquaintance who was working with the police.

Over the years I have worked my security down to a camp. This is a joke! I thought prison was meant to protect society from its most deviant. I think of the American taxpayer, and the financial burden that this prison system places on them; it is a scam. I also think of the burden that this systems places on liberty and on the constitution, and it is not worth it. The idea that this system gives safety and security is a false notion. The war on drugs is like duct tape on a leaking dam, a temporary solution that never addresses the entire problem.
