Roosevelt woman faces charges in marijuana bust

The call to police on Monday was to report a suspicious package at the Roadway Express delivery service in Syosset.

It ended up with narcotics cops making a felony drug bust of a Roosevelt woman -- for possession of almost 600 pounds of marijuana.

It happened like this:

Nassau County Police received the call Monday and responded with a K-9 unit to the delivery service on Gordon Drive in Syosset. After a drug search of the terminal, the police dog had a so-called "positive indication" on the suspicious box. Police opened the box and found five large shrink-wrapped bundles, each containing approximately 114 pounds of marijuana. During the course of the investigation, police said an unknown male called the delivery service to inquire about delivery of the box -- and arrangements were made to complete delivery.

Undercover officers then responded to 66 E. Clinton Ave. in Roosevelt, where Belinda Smith, 43, accepted delivery of the shipment. After police learned the woman had an open warrant from Nassau County District Court for petit larceny, they arrested her.

Smith was charged with criminal possession of marijuana, first degree, a Class C felony, as well as petit larceny. She was scheduled to be arraigned this morning in First District Court in Hempstead.
