It has been said that the truth shall prevail and the truth shall set you free. The biggest obstacle we have as a legalization movement is exposing the governments’ and pharmaceutical giants’ propaganda from actual truth. There have been so many lies peddled to the general public, they haven’t known what to believe. But eyes are being opened through sites like 420magazine.com.
As we go through the day, we have a responsibility and a mission as activist to speak the truth about our favorite herb. This can be sharing news stories with co-workers; bringing pro-MMJ literature to your family physician; writing letters to the editor and your elected officials; attending rallies; and most of all, living a life that presents cannabis users in a positive light. We all know the stereo types created by the government’s propaganda machine - lazy pot heads. On occasion I will have an employee tell me that they are really stoned when they arrive at work. What choices do I have: Send them home? Let them take it easy all night? Or let them know that they are going to work extra hard to prove that cannabis smokers are hard workers that take pride in their work? I take the last option and many stop coming to work stoned because they say I work their ass off when they come to work high. If smoking pot makes you unproductive in life, then you shouldn’t be smoking. That is pretty much the bottom line on any substance. I come to work medicated with MMJ and I take ownership and pride in my work. I give a honest night’s work for a honest night’s pay. Well, the pay could be better! No matter what path you are taking with your life, know that others watch and take note on how you handle yourself. Are you the pot head that arrives late to work with your music vibrating the windows and trash falls to the parking lot as you open the door? If you are, you are making some of their propaganda a truth. Webster’s defines propaganda as the “spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person.” Personally, I don’t want to assist the government spread their propaganda consciously or unconsciously. That means living a life that gives marijuana a good report. It means taking the higher road. It means going the extra mile. It means living a life that helps the cause, not hindering it. Whether you are a student, doctor, construction worker or disabled; you can share the truth about marijuana in word and deed and see that the truth shall prevail.

Very well said . . .
Unfortunately I would be way too afraid to ever let professors or bosses at either job know about it because of that stereotype. I take pride in every aspect of my life and I work very hard. I know everyone would be shocked to know I smoked. I get excellent grades, have my own neuroscience research project, and two jobs (one is kind of lame though, lol- info desk worker). I do a lot and I do it exceptionally. One day I would love to be able to discuss it openly without fear of losing a job or something else important to me. I agree though, people need to stop allowing that stereotype to define them. I know too many people who allow that to become their identity and it disgusts me. |

Alyssa, I can hear in now, "We all wondered how you were such a happy worker all the time!" Maybe someday when the atmosphere is better, you can surprise them. In the mean time, keep writing letters to your representatives and everything said in the doctor's office is suppose to be confidential. Peace

My come to work wasted every night worker came to work his last night. His production had dropped to half of the other workers. This makes me think of how smoking with your employees can get you in hot water. I have smoked cannabis many times with this employee, and hope the fired employee doesn't take it personal. I had an obligation to the company we work for and the other employees that were having to carry his load. I think smoking with employees after work may have to become a thing of the pass. Not all employees are mature enough to handle such a relationship.
