By Clarence V Created 2008-06-10 11:55 The famous Harvard University in Massachusetts is in news again, but this time, its for a bad one -- the three members of the psychiatry department have been accused of not declaring millions of dollars of earned cash over a seven-year period from drug makers. Sen. Charles E Grassley, Republican-Iowa said, child psychiatrist, Dr. Joseph Biederman and two of his colleagues, Dr. Timothy E Wilens and Dr. Thomas Spencer have violated federal and university research rules designed to police potential conflicts of interest. They failed to report to the University about much of their earnings. Wilens reportedly earned $1.6 million and Spencer, around $1 million. Dr. Joseph Biederman is known throughout the world for his contribution in researching anti-psychotic medicines for children. He earned at least $1.6 million in consulting fees from drug makers from 2000 to 2007. The Times reported that the three researcher's have conducted large research in child psychiatry, which in some cases has ultimately advocated for the use of certain medicines, not yet approved, in children. Harvard Medical School said, "We take this issue seriously and will do all we can to ensure it is resolved fairly and equitably for all parties involved." Harvard University's Standing Committee on Conflicts of Interest and Commitment will be looking into the cases which were referred to them by the dean of the psychiatry department, the statement said. The committee is in charge of reviewing policy compliance. Dr. Biederman in an e-mailed statement said, "My interests are solely in the advancement of medical treatment through rigorous and objective study," and he said he took conflict-of-interest policies "very seriously." The other two psychiatrists also said that they thought they had complied with the rules. The investigation has revealed that all three have failed to disclose important outside information to Harvard University. The investigation is said to bring in light more names and facts which are not yet explained and the officials said that they will reveal the findings to the public soon. 3 Harvard Psychiatrists Bring Shame To University Last edited by 420; 06-17-2008 at 09:24 PM. |

What's sad is these shrinks are being paid off for meds research for our children.
Of course the medical marijuana advocates can't afford to pay off these guys, the only way they know how to conduct research. |
