Strike the match and let it burn until the sulfur is gone, then light your bowl. The flame burning on wood or cardboard is as safe for your health as any other method. You just need to be very careful not to drop a burning or smoldering match somewhere that might catch on fire. Wildfires and house fires are often deadly.

Candles drip wax.
I used matches for years. And no, its not safe unless you either A) tear/break them in half after use. or B) put them in your pocket. "Only YOU can prevent forest fires." Smokey Bear

I too used matches for years. When did the Bic lighter show up? Sometime in the '70s. Anyway...it was part of the skills I had to learn as a Cannabis user - to be up at the top of a windy hill on my bike, lighting a joint with the match held between my 2 sets of fingers (that sounds weird), striking the match and cupping my hand around the tip of the jay, placing the flame right on the tip, burning the paper twist off, and inhaling deeply before the match burned my fingers or the wind blew it out. Then smoking the rest of the dooobie and finally racing down the steep curving hills at a high rate of speed until I reached sea level. The ritual is part of the pleasure.

I tried matches once. Gave up because it would go out everytime before I tried to light the bowl. :-( I learned after to always have a back uplighter. :-(

Yeah Carrie, carrying my point further, with the advent of the Bic and other disposable lighters the basic match-using skillz necessary for Cannabis imbibers is a thing of the past. Maybe someday I'll get a chance to show you how to use those matches. That would be fun (for me, anyway). :)

FreakNature, coming from what I'm thinking is a 'younger' generation, I myself use and thoroughly enjoy matches. It must be the ritual that I am drawn to. Whatever it is, it pleases me.
