just thinking about a led I cannot use a hps since my landlord would notice the increase in power usage. I also would only be growing 1 or 2 plants at a time (buku or another kush variant )

that looks like a decent enough LED, and I think it would work great for vegging, but as far as flowering goes- an HPS is the obvious choice. T5's are great for veg growth.
as far as your landlord thing- I want to say this gently, but that seems like paranoia. the LED is super easy to hide- you have incandescent bulbs in your house that use more than that. but a 400W hps running 12/12 uses less than 6kW a day. you can usually go online and see what your power usage is on a day by day basis, and my apt uses almost 50kW daily. electricity is cheap. long story short: if your landlord notices, they are paying way too much attention. unless by landlord you meant parents, in which case growing might not be the best option.

thanks for the replies, No I am a bit too old to live at home. I just bought a compact t5 from HTG, it seems to be a nice little light and I am going to order a digital 400 watt hps next week.
On a different note I tossed the free gigabud seed I got from the bank in a glass with a wet paper towel and a piece of glad wrap on top and the little guy popped in two days and its day five now and showing the first set of real leaves. It seems rather fast or am I just excited?

Get a nice 600-watt HPS. Running 12 hours a day it only uses 216 kW hours per (30 day) month. Figure out what your electricity rate is. If it's 11 cents per, that's only $23.76.
Go to your landlord and tell him/her that you've just purchased a new computer - or plasma television but if they're ever in your apartment and don't see the plasma it would seem odd and I bet you've got a computer lol - and you've figured that at the amount of time you'll be using it each month it'll run your electricity up $23.76 (whatever) and just give him that much extra. He won't bat an eye except maybe to thank you and to gripe about the folks in 2C who must be running a small factory in their unit and thinking he won't notice the extra usage. [EDIT: People hear about operations getting busted due to electrical usage and think, "Man, I better not even try," without realizing that those are cases where people have 15-30,000 watts of light, they get caught stealing electricity, or their "extra" usage is just one of many other suspicious things that are going on where any idiot walking past would say, "Hey, I bet they're growing pot in there."] |

Thanks for the info on exact usage, I always thought they used more than that. Where you referring to mag. or digital?
Yea the landlord got all fussy cause I was out of town for 3 months and when I got back I bought a 60" lcd, He was upset cause he claims that the bill went up 40 dollars over last month, I reminded him that I was out of town for the last few months and maybe thats why the bill went up but he was having none of it, he just seems to need something to be pissy about.

A mag ballast will consume more electricity.
Your landlord is complaining about $40 more usage after you just saved him three months' worth? Hey, not to be an ass or anything but I guess you have a lease that says utilities INCLUDED? Decades ago there was an apartment building in town and the landlord thought he was paying too much electricity bill so he decided to roll the (central boiler) heat back at night. So the tenants turned on every electrical device and all of their water taps for a month. When he was going nuts trying to figure out how the bills were a fortune it was explained to him that they would probably go down if the heat went up. The heat was turned back up. |

Thats kind of how I felt about it. O and did I mention that I told him that I would pay the electric bill? I have no lease and my rent is 300$ a month. When I am out of town he only charges me 200$. He is a good dude he is just a bit fussy.

No lease means you're at his mercy. A lease clearly defines things for both sides.
Hopefully you two can come to an agreement. Good luck! |

We will, I am sure of that. I have known him for years and we are pretty good friends, he is just one of those people that needs to fuss over things. I help him and his family out with a lot of things and him and I have never argued, he just likes to here himself winge.
