Colorado: County Approves Hemp Rules

Pueblo County officially became the first Colorado county to adopt regulations for growing industrial hemp.

The board of county commissioners voted unanimously to adopt the rules, which set limits on where and how hemp can be grown and try to address concerns that hemp plants could cross-pollinate with fields of marijuana, its more potent cousin.

Both hemp and marijuana come from the same plant, but while marijuana features high concentrations of THC, the chemical that gets users high, hemp contains virtually no THC and the plant material is used for its fibers and oils to manufacture things like clothing, paper and rope.

The new rules define hemp as cannabis plants with 0.3 percent THC or less. Many marijuana strains sold in retail shops and medical centers range from 10 percent to more than 20 percent THC.
