St. Joseph County - The St. Joseph County Conservation District has been taking the time to educate the community about industrial hemp, which can be used for clothing, cleaning products and more.

Carol Higgins, chair of the Conservation District, said it's a matter of time and educating people on what industrial hemp is and how it is not marijuana.

"There are companies in the United States that are doing it [selling products made from industrial hemp] and what makes it interesting is that we can sell the products made from industrial hemp, we can manufacture them, we can use them for all kinds of things, but we can't grow the crop in the country," Higgins explained.

Earlier this summer, a movie about industrial hemp called "Bringing it Home" was featured at the Riviera Theatre to help educate the community on the differences between industrial hemp and marijuana.

Higgins said the film "referred to the fact that our founding fathers considered it one of the most important crops in the 1700s because it was so versatile and they used to grow a lot of things, then it became illegal in WWII; in 1970, it completely got abused.

[It] became a class I drug which makes it worse than anything else out there, and it's a very sad story."
