MotherHemp is delighted to announce that Dr Jace Callaway, Ph.D, scientific
adviser to MotherHemp, has been awarded funding for clinical trials to investigate the properties of hemp seed oil as a functional food. Tekes, a public funded company in Finland, will be sponsoring the trials conducted by Dr Callaway and his scientific team at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, University of Kuopio, Finland. The trials will begin on 1st March 2001 and last for two years. Dr Callaway has also recently completed the first human clinical health trials on hemp seed - the results to be announced by MotherHemp in the UK in April 2001. Jake Yearsley, General Manager at MotherHemp said: "We are very excited about announcing the results from Dr Callaway's first set of clinical trials - this represents a major step forward in bringing the numerous nutritional and health benefits of hemp seed oil to the retail markets." 1/3 He adds: "Since our launch at Bio Fach last year we have received tremendous interest from the organic, speciality food, vegan and vegetarian sectors. The MotherHemp food range has also proved very popular for those on restrictive diets as the majority of our products are dairy, wheat, gluten, lactose and sugar-free." Hemp Seed Nutrition Hemp seeds are considered by nutritionists to be one of the most complete sources of vegetable nutrition known to man. Hemp seeds provide protein, minerals, vitamins and Essential Fatty Acids, all in a form easily digested by the body. They can be useful in reducing cholesterol and protecting against heart disease, and can stimulate hair and nail growth, while the oils and Vitamin E they contain are important for healthy skin. Hemp seeds contains many of the Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) that the body requires for healthy day-to-day operation. These EFAs are present in the right ratio for optimum absorption into the body. Hemp seed is also a good source of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), the most valued ingredient of Evening Primrose Oil, which is believed to help Premenstrual Tension (PMT). 2/3 Notes to editors MotherHemp was formed in February 1998 and is based in East Sussex.
