Soil Germination Problems

You ever wonder why those seeds don't germinate? Here are some things that might stop your seeds from germinating in soil!

Too Wet
Seeds need to be damp, not wet for germination. Excess water prevents oxygen getting to the seed. Poorly drained soils may also cause soil fungus diseases. The condition of wet soils may be improved by adding perlite. which will aerate your soil.

Too Dry
A certain amount of water is essential for germination, so maintaining a constant soil moisture during the germination period is vital, cover containers with glass or glad wrap to prevent you soil drying out.

Too Hot
High temperatures result in excessive soil desiccation and injury to seeds and seedlings.

Too Cold
Cold temperatures can kill seedlings and prevent germination. Cool temperatures can result in slow, un-even germination, and attack by soil diseases. You may want to start your seeds indoors, before outplanting. Make sure planting dose not done too early, when it is stll cold and there is a frost hazard.

Planting Too Deep
This will result in delayed emergence. seeds may not be able to grow enough to reach the surface on the limited food storage within the seed. Soil temperature is also lower with depth. Plant your seed 1/2 and inch to an inch down for best results.

Planting Seeds Too Shallow
If you plant your seeds to shallow the seeds can dry out.

Soil Too Firm
Making your soil mix to firm can prevent oxygen getting to your seeds also drainage is also affected.

Soil Too Loose
Soil which is too loose results in too much air surrounding the seed, and they will not absorb moisture and will most likely dry out.

Soil Fungus
Seeds may root or seedlings fall over. Overwatering, poor drainage and lack of aeration will increase the likelihood of this occurring. Plant seeds in sterilized potting mix, and make sure you containers are clean.

Non Viable seeds
If your seeds have not been stored correctly they can deteriorate. Look for dark brown seeds. Avoid and light colored or whitish seeds as they are not mature.

My favorite method to stores seeds is to place your seeds in a film canister, then fill it up to the top with rice, this will absorb any moisture, and either freeze them for long term storage or place in a dry, dark cool place for a shorter time period.

Im putting seeds in a pre-pared soil dough nut. Are these not up to par Im only doing 3 in them and the rest in rock wool. I will see but im sure that theres a reason for the wool:smokin:

what happens if the seed dries out? can it be rewatered if it has only been a few hours?

I have two freebie seeds that refused to soak and crack open, when I was germinating my ordered seeds. I put them into their solo cups just like the others ...but nothing. after a while, I knew they were'nt going to pop. so I pulled them out and did the B1, root hormone IBA
cup of water soak...that was 11 hours ago. One seed sunk right off the bat, one floated...9 hours into it, both were sitting at the bottom. Now just waiting to see... " I'll post what happens."

Hey
First time grower here, trying to learn a few things, but i'm a bit confused with an issue (and since i can't start new posts, i thought this could be somehow related to the soil perhaps?)

The matter is, my plant is changing from vegetative state to flowering (starting to see buds forming near the trunk), but the lower leaves started to go yellow and withering, so i took them away so the rest wouldn't suffer.
I read it may be lack of sulphur in the soil? I bought some nutrients with the values 3-5-7 NPK and added to the water but the problem keeps going, and starting to go on the upper leaves.

I'll post a picture soon so you guys may look at it and if possible explain what could i do or change.

Thanks a million guys, happy grows! :)

A picture of the whole plant would help. Also what are you using for lighting?

@ SOKRAM

I wouldn't say sulphur would be the issue. It sounds like you have a lack of nitrogen. If the plants are in the process of changing their cycle, they usually start consuming more nutrients. If the yellowing leaves are at the top of your plant or the yellow leaves are mostly new growth, then you probably don't have a nitrogen deficiency. Nitrogen deficiencies always affect the oldest, lowest leaves first. Like in your case. My suggestion is to do a full flush of those two plants with a LIGHT nitrogen solution..( but remember to flush on the reg when using chems in the flowering stage) So basically you do not have to worry. You can put your plants with the others, the "yellowing" is simply the plant stealing energy from the lower limbs. ;) Hope this helped :thumb:

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but I can't find one that deals with this particular 0roblem. I planted 3 seeds and 2 are great but the third one is sitting on the soil sideways with a sprout/seed growing out the side. Does this sprout/root get planted down or up? I made a whole and placd the what I think is a root down in the hole, but is this right? Any help would be appreciated!!!! Thanks!

Hey guys, im new to this. In fact i accidentally germinated a seed and decided i was gonna go for it. I have a shit setup. Red solo cup with holes in it, and window. No, i dont have access to none of that fancy stuff like light fixtures and such, im in a tight pinch and this single seed can pull me out of it. If anyone can help a guy out with next to nothing, youd be a miracle worker. And id be heavilly greatful.

Hi I have a diffrent problem. I germinate a bruce banner#3 pheno along with a northen express in seprate cups of water and noticed at some point during the night one of the glasses of water with the seed in had fallen over.I found the seed still attached to the glass but Im not sure it will survive so I transplanted then in to some tissue.
will the seedling be ok you think guys??
It was out the water for about 5 hours and it had already cracked open with a very small beginning tail????

Hi, I just had one of my seedlings give up on me. The seed helmet was stuck on it for too long and it never recovered. When I removed the shell, the first set of leaves was yellow, but I still let it try to recover, which it didn't. My other seedlings are 5 days old (since they started growing the taproot) and have the first set of real leaves forming. They're about 5cm tall.

So my question:
Is it too late to start germinating new seed to put it growing with the rest of the girls?
