Question Fish Tank Hydro Set Up

So i'm using an aquarium for a couple of hydro plants. I wanted to get an opinion, what should I use to hold the plants? A sheet of plastic? A thick sheet of styrofoam and then cut holes for netted pots? Also, what would you recommend to cover the glass? I was thinkin black construction paper, but I wanted to make sure to ask.

Hey Slayer,
If I were you I wouldn't use a fish tank, you're going to run into a host of issues, and draining it is gonna be a major b!tch. You'd be better off just doing it in a normal rubbermaid 18-30 gallon bin.
But if you are hell bent on using the fish tank, black construction paper definitely wouldn't do the job, you'd prolly end up having to paint it black. Black construction paper would still let a bit of light thru.

good luck w/the gro either way dude

Re: Fish Tank Hydro Set Up

For sure. My other thought was a couple black 5 gallon buckets from home depot. I figure that's plenty of space and it'd be easy to plumb for drainage and everything.

long as you don't want monster plants, the buckets work great.

I'm focusing on quality over quantity. I am however curious why I couldn't get monster plants with em.

The smaller the pot the smaller the plant, when roots fill the whole of any size pot they basiclly slow down and will not get much larger.

Re: Fish Tank Hydro Set Up

I find it difficult to balance the top of the plant at the end of the week with an almost empty res, guess I should probably bump my net pot size up a couple inches and glue a brick or two to the bottom. That'll fixer right nice like...
