Mh are better for veg but not good for flowering due to the light spectrum.
If u could only but one bulb for complete growth then i would suggest a hps. Dont worrie about the make a hps is a hps! If u go to hydrostores then a 400w hps is like 60 buks! :O go to some were like screw fix i paid 10 pounds for mine! |

Both are HID (High-Intensity Discharge) lights.
MH (Metal Halide) produces a blue-green spectrum of light which is suited for vegging plants. It allows for shorter internodal spacing (distance between branches) which is desirable. HPS (High-Pressure Sodium) produces a red-orange spectrum of light which simulates the autumn harvest. It is best suited for flowering/fruiting plants and allows for larger yields. If you were to choose just one to grow from start to finish, veg through flower, it would be the HPS. The plants will still veg. using the HPS although they will grow taller with longer internodal spacing. In contrast, the plants will not flower very well under the MH and it's blue-green spectrum alone. This is why I prefer a switchable ballast that will accept both types of HID lamp for the best of both worlds.

Hello, I have two(2) 400w Metal halides. One bulb is a "Grow power" 6500K-Blue and the second is "Grow power" 3000K-Red. I also have four 12x12 Red LED panels and 12 cfl's @ 23w ea. My grow space is a white Melamine Cab. with a 2 foot x 4 foot floor space. I purchased from "homedeephole".
I have designed the Cab. so that the HID's may be moved from 5' to 6' to 7' during the life of growth cycle. The Red led's are going to be placed at 5' and the Cfl's will be evenly spaced throughout. I believe I have the vegetative period of the grow covered. My question is will the combination of Red MH + Red LED + Cfl's @ 2700k Mostly(some are 3500k, 5500k, and 6500k) be enough for a good strong budding stage? or do I need to switch to HPS? The total wattage consumed is 1131.2W I am really trying to get an even distribution of light as well as a complete light spectrum. P.S. I have ventilation covered and I plan on using a 12/12 schedule. ![]() This is my first "indoor grow" BTW. |
