Officials are investigating the death this week of a 21-year-old jail inmate.
James L. Brown of Green Bay died Monday, Brown County Medical Examiner Al Klimek said Thursday. An autopsy was performed, and toxicology results are pending — they generally take 10 to 14 days, Klimek said. Natural disease has been ruled out, and the Brown County Sheriff's Department is investigating the case as a suspicious death. Authorities have scheduled a news conference on the matter at 10 a.m. today. Brown County authorities said Brown was "displaying seizure-like activity" and was transported to St. Vincent Hospital on Monday, where he was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. The sheriff's department said in a news release that a corrections officer was alerted at 6 p.m. Monday by another inmate that there was a medical emergency in Brown's pod. "The pod officer had just completed his security/wellness check less than two minutes earlier. Officers and Health Services Unit staff immediately reported to the cell and found the inmate displaying seizure-like activity," the department said. "Brown was able to walk from his cell and was able to speak with officers while the medical staff monitored his condition and called for a rescue squad," it said. "Mr. Brown was further treated and transported by Green Bay Fire/Rescue personnel to St Vincent's hospital." Brown was serving a commitment for possession of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and was awaiting sentencing after revocation of probation. Brown was booked into the jail on May 25. He was most recently housed in a medium-security pod. Brown had no previous medical history of note, the sheriff's department said.
