Silverthorne's town council will likely approve regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries within town limits on Oct. 28, after giving an initial, unanimous OK to the ordinance Wednesday. A public hearing is set for Oct. 28.
The town already has one dispensary that's opened a shop near Interstate 70, and other inquiries about starting medical marijuana businesses have been made. Silverthorne's moratorium on dispensaries within the town expires Nov. 10. If council OKs the regulations later this month, medical marijuana dispensaries can open in any zone already allowing drug stores and pharmacies. Other location requirements include not being too close to schools, public places, residential neighborhoods and other medical marijuana dispensaries. According to Silverthorne's community development director Mark Leidal, the proposed ordinance also requires dispensaries to comply with limitations regulating store hours, security, product displays and signs. Silverthorne's first medical marijuana dispensary — High Country Healing — recently opened in the Quiznos building, across from Wendy's. High Country Healing procured a business license from the town before Silverthorne instituted its 90-day moratorium. Dillon's take on dispensaries The Town of Dillon hopes to have medical marijuana dispensary regulations in place before its 90-day moratorium runs out Nov. 19. Dillon's potential ordinance incorporates many standards, including a rule confining medical marijuana businesses to Dillon's commercial and mixed-use zones only. That would be north of Dillon Dam Road and Highway 6. Dillon council members are still reviewing options, and a draft of potential regulations will be presented by staff to council at the next town work session. If an acceptable solution isn't found in time, Dillon still could extend its moratorium on dispensaries by emergency ordinance. Both Frisco and Breckenridge have already passed ordinances regulating the newly blossomed medical marijuana industry.
