Arkansas medical marijuana advocates are beginning the process of trying to legalize medical marijuana in their state.

The new group Arkansans for Compassionate Care has succeeded already in getting General Dustin McDaniel, an Arkansas attorney, to certify the proposal's ballot language.

Reuters quoted Ryan Denham, campaign director for Arkansans for Compassionate Care, as saying, "we want to ensure that sick and dying patients in Arkansas have the ability to get the medicine they need and that is sometimes medical marijuana."

Conversely, Jerry Cox of the Arkansas Family Council holds that legalizing marijuana makes it more available for people to use recreationally.

"Any individual who can acquire, grow or own his own marijuana is one step away from sharing with his friends who may not have any medical issues," Cox said, as quoted by Reuters.

California, and District of Columbia, and 15 other states have already legalized medical marijuana. Like these states, Arkansas would have a strict list of conditions people must have to be able to get a prescription for it, such as cancer and AIDS.

On Tuesday, the Arkansans for Compassionate Care began to collect signatures from registered voters. They have until July 6, 2012 to submit them to the attorney general's office in order to qualify the proposal for the November 2012 general election ballot.
