Colorado - Two more retail marijuana shops have been approved in Pueblo County. The Board of County Commissioners on Monday approved the retail licenses for Pueblo West Organics and Nature's Remedy, both located in Pueblo West. The two new licenses bring the number of retail marijuana shops in the county to five, already half of the county's limit of 10 retail stores for 2014.

As with past retail marijuana license requests, the commissioners held a public hearing and there was no opposition to either application. "This is big," said Commissioner Liane "Buffie" McFadyen. "Pueblo County is taking a great leap not only for the county and the state but the nation." Randy Russell, owner of Pueblo West Organics, told the commissioners since opening his medicinal marijuana store in April, the business has developed a strong patient following which led him to pursue the retail operation.

Pueblo West Organics is located at 609 E. Enterprise Drive. "We've had great feedback from our customers. With that, we want to move on and see if we can bring that business atmosphere to a retail store," he said. In addition to the license for the retail store, the license also provides for two retail marijuana cultivation facilities and a medical marijuana optional premises cultivation for Russell's operation.

Russell said he plans to split the growing operation between the existing business building on Enterprise Drive and a second cultivation facility at 56 N. Precision Drive in Pueblo West. David Jiminez, owner of Nature's Remedy, said he, too, plans to add a retail operation and cultivation facility to his existing medicinal marijuana business at 748 E. Industrial Blvd. Jiminez said his goal is to create more of an upscale business that would cater to nontraditional headshop customers. Jiminez said both the retail and medicinal business will operate in the same location, but there will be separate cash registers for each operation to ensure the proper sales taxes will be charged for the retail business. Both retail shops are scheduled to open in January.
