A second marijuana petition found its way to Durant this week following the recent presence of a medical marijuana petition last week in the city. This week, citizens can not only sign the petition for the legalization of medical marijuana to go for a vote of the people in November but also one for recreational use. The new petition for voting on recreational use began July 21 and was spearheaded by Vicki Gaylor. Gaylor is an independent running for the Oklahoma Senate District Six seat against incumbent Josh Brecheen and Democratic candidate Joe Hill.
Gaylor said signing the petitions will allow the people to decide if marijuana should be made legal. "The people are not being represented in this state and the people need to have a say. This is the only way to get these issues on the ballot so the people can actually vote on them," said Gaylor. Gaylor said each petition needs 160,000 votes. Each person who wishes to sign the petitions must have a valid driver's license and be registered to vote in Oklahoma. While the window to sign the petition concerning medical marijuana has only an approximate three weeks left, the one for recreational use just began its 90-day stint on July 21.
Gaylor has had the petition here in Durant this week and will be taking it to Atoka Saturday. She said whether you want the use of this plant to be legalized or not, you should sign the petitions to give the people the right to decide. She said she is running for office for much the same reason she has this petition. She wants the people to be represented. "The people down here feel abandoned," she said. Gaylor said this is her first time to run for office and it is a grassroots effort because she wants to represent the people of district six.
