Rick Steves, the Seattle-area travel entrepreneur who helped pass Washington's marijuana legalization measure, will campaign for a similar measure in Oregon in nine cities next month. Steves, who built a travel empire with his guidebooks and public broadcasting shows, was a key promoter of the Washington initiative because of his clean-cut demeanor and mainstream appeal. He also contributed $350,000 to the measure.

"One thing I've learned in 30 years of travel is that treating marijuana as a crime does not work," Steves said in a press release announcing his latest tour promoting Oregon's Measure 91. Steves has said he first used marijuana while traveling in Afghanistan in the 1970s but is only an occasional user of cannabis.

The tour will begin Tuesday, Oct. 7 with a $250-per-person fundraiser and subsequent $10-a-ticket talk in Portland, followed by free appearances in Beaverton, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, Medford, Ashland, Bend and Gresham. Details on the times of the appearances can be seen on the Yes on Measure 91 website.
