A new statewide survey suggests Michigan voters do not want to raise the sales tax to fix the roads but 64 percent would vote to tax marijuana to get the job done. 6 News Capitol correspondent Tim Skubick has talked to the governor about the first polling results on this issue.

When asked if they would vote to fix the roads with a sales tax hike, this first poll shows 43 percent would vote yes on the tax hike, while 49% would not with 8% not sure.

The governor was hoping there would be more yes votes than no votes.

Reporter: "49 percent does not make your day?"
Governor Snyder: "No, but it doesn't deter me. We'll go out and do what we need to do to have this be a winning ballot proposal."

But in an interesting twist to the road funding issue, turns out lots of folks would tax marijuana to fix the roads.

The poll, commissioned by a pro-marijuana group, found 64 percent would vote yes on that, 28 percent would vote no and 8 percent are not sure.

Rep. Mike Callton introduced his pot for potholes bill last year and it went nowhere. The governor reacts. "I don't see marijuana being the solution to our pot hole issue and our crumbling bridges issue."

Meanwhile, on the governor's efforts to turn the negative polling results around, 6 News has learned there's been a major strategy decision made by the governor's team.

The governor has concluded he can not defeat the anti-tax coalition on whether the tax hike is justified.

So the governor will shift the conversation to saving lives if you vote for his plan. "The key issue is public safety. If you look at it, one out of nine bridges is structurally deficit. when you swerve to move that pothole you're a distracted driver putting your self at risk and others. If you blow a tire you are at risk of a major accident. that's unacceptable."
