Two Arizonans and one Mexican resident were arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers over the weekend in separate smuggling attempts, according to a recent release.
An 18-year-old Douglas woman was arrested on Jan. 23 for attempting to smuggle more than 238 pounds of marijuana across the border in the vehicle she was driving. According to CBP the drugs were worth an estimated $119,000.
In two separate incidents on Jan. 25 two people were also arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the U.S. A Glendale woman was arrested after a drug sniffing canine alerted to the possibility of drugs in her car. According to CBP officers a secondary search revealed nearly 74 pounds of marijuana concealed in her Hyundai sedan. CBP estimated the drugs were worth $37,000.
On the same day another arrest was made, this time for attempting to smuggle money out of the U.S. into Mexico. According to CBP officials the man was heading outbound when he was pulled for secondary inspection. CBP officers found $39,000 in unreported currency.
CBP officers seized all vehicles, drugs and money for processing and all three attempted smugglers were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
