It just got its license, but seeds are already being sown at Alberta's first official medical marijuana farm.

CEO of Aurora Cannabis Terry Booth spoke with the Alberta Morning News. Booth says the technology and techniques at the farm are world-class. Booth says some people in the industry have toured the operation, and said it appears to be very best facility they've seen in Canada.

Part of the reason for that is the heavy oversight from the Federal government. Booth says it's not just because of legal issues, but also because the plants are being grown as medicine.

"So there's rigorous testing that we have to do on the plant when we harvest, and it's grown in a pharmaceutical environment." he says. "Our facility is very much like a pharmacy production plant, except we have growing in it."

Booth says the first crop will be made up of several types of cannabis.

"We're going to have various strains that deal with various ailments." He says. "Like neuropathic pain is a big one, anxiety, sleep, appetite for your cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy. So just those four ailments alone determine four different strains."

Aurora isn't allowed to market directly to patients, but, Booth says, more and more people are looking to medical marijuana as an alternative to harsher prescription drugs.
