If you have a relative or close friend that suffers from at least one of the health conditions enumerated, then they are among the lucky ones approved by the Illinois Marijuana Board to legally use the drug.

During the announcement said on Monday, the 11 health conditions:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Chronic Post-Operative Pain
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Migraine
  • Neuro-Behcet’s Autoimmune Disease
  • Neuropathy, peripheral and diabetic
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome
These conditions are recommended by the board to be included in the state’s medical marijuana program. However, it might take several months before these conditions are officially recorded on the program as it still needs to several process: approval by the Department of Public Health Director Nirah Shah (as appointed by Gov. Bruce Rauner), then the written regulation will undergo strict processes for legislative rules.

Parents, or guardians, of the ill patient must get a signed certification from a physician to officially be granted an application for legal use of medical marijuana in Illinois.

The board rejected anxiety, diabetes, and essential thrombeythemia with a JAK 2 mutation to be part of the recommended conditions as it possess some side effects that are not beneficial to the patient. Take diabetes for an example, patients will experience increased appetite because of the drug but these should be avoided because diabetic need to monitor every amount and content of the food they eat.

At present, there are over 18,400 citizens who signed up for the program to get them sufficient access to the drug whenever the patient needs it. Furthermore, Illinois is implementing a strict medical marijuana program by only allowing the approved individuals to get their hands on the drug under strict amounts to avoid abuse and illegal selling in the black market.
