A PALLIATIVE Care Australia commissioned survey has revealed more than two-thirds of Australians support the use of medicinal marijuana.
PCA CEO Liz Callaghan said 67% of the 1000 Australians asked approved using the drug for medicinal purposes.
"The number is quite high, but importantly large numbers of 'undecided' participants makes a strong case for a good evidence base for any introduction of the drug in a medical context," she said.
"Almost a quarter, or 24%, of those surveyed were not sure if they agreed with using cannabis in medicine and about 9% opposed.
"Those opposed to medicinal cannabis based their views largely on the fact it is currently illegal and others raised concerns about possible side effects.
"These side effects need to be well known before we can support the drug being used in medicine."
The survey found people in older age brackets were more supportive of medicinal marijuana use with 72% of people between 75 and 84 in favour compared to 62% of those aged between 18 and 24.
A bill is currently before parliament that would make the federal government responsible for overseeing the production, distribution and use of medicinal cannabis.
An inquiry into the bill is set to report back next month.
