For John and Sherry Sharpnack, remembering their daughter, Megan, brings as much pain as it does joy.

"She was happy, cheerful," said her mother, Sherry. "She liked to joke. She had things she liked to do. She had a connect four she liked to play with. She liked to pet the cats occasionally. She liked Leggos."

Megan was 4-months-old when she suffered her first seizure.

"This is what caused severe mental retardation and physical frailty," said Megan's father, John. "It caused a lot of issues for the poor girl."

While her family was able to manage her illness, they said it never became any easier.

"It was usually a surprise," said John. "There was no memo, like Tuesday at four o'clock, look out."

Doctors tried many different medications, but that a times made things even worse.

"Some of these drugs have potentially horrific side effects," said John. "Where as medical marijuana, I haven't heard of any."

The Sharpnacks said they aren't sure if medical marijuana would have helped their daughter, but they would have liked to have given it a chance.

For now they are left with the hope lawmakers will act and another family will get the help they need.

"They say losing a child is the hardest thing you can go through in life," said Sherry. "If this bill could be passed. If one person could be spared our pain by being able to try this. It would be worth just the try."

A bill to legalize medical marijuana in Nebraska is now up for final reading.

If passed, it would make Nebraska the 24th state to enact a medical marijuana program.
