The Goshen Town Board is supporting an application to grow medical marijuana in the town.

John Petsko, chief operating officer of Scientific Herbal Advances, told board members that the company is looking to gain New York State approval under the Compassionate Care Act to cultivate and process medical marijuana. Acquiring approval from the host community is one of the early steps in the state licensing process.

In June 2014, New York passed the Compassionate Care Act, which allows patients with serious health conditions to benefit from the use of medical cannabis. If Scientific Herbal Advances, based in Manhattan, receives state approval to grow and process medical marijuana, the company will continue dialog with the town. The town board has approved a non-binding resolution in support of its application.

The business is interested in a 9.1-acre parcel on Pulaski Highway, where it would convert onsite buildings for use in its facility. The buildings had been used for agriculture and industry.

Why Goshen? According to Petsko, Goshen has a rich agricultural heritage, a skilled work force in the field, and a location that offers easy access to highways.

Scientific Herbal Advances is physician-owned and -operated, comprised of doctors, scientists, and agricultural specialists focused on producing high-quality medical marijuana. Owner and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ramesh Sawhney is a certified anesthesiologist and a pain management specialist for over 25 years, specializing in interventional and ayurvedic medicine.

Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world's oldest holistic - whole body - healing systems. Developed thousands of years ago in India, it's based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a balance of mind, body and spirit.

Cannabis has been shown to alleviate medical symptoms of seizures, headaches, nausea, and pain, as well as increase appetite. Conditions that are eligible for medical marijuana include cancer, Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Acquired Immune Deficiency (AIDS), Lou Gehrigs Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Intractable Spasticity, Epilepsy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Neuropathies, and Huntington's Disease.

While further research is needed, experts believe medical marijuana many combat the advancement of Alzheimer's Disease, cancer, PTSD and other serious ailments.

Scientific Herbal Advances is restricted to selling medical marijuana as capsules or as oils used for drops or vaporizing. It doesn't have the same appearance as recreational marijuana, and it isn't smoked.

Town Supervisor Doug Bloomfield said a public informational meeting will be held to help people understand the benefits of medical marijuana.
