Senators Delay Vote On Anti-monopoly Item Aimed At Marijuana Legalization

A Senate panel has delayed a vote on an anti-monopoly proposal that potentially could block marijuana legalization in Ohio this fall.

A vote anticipated Tuesday was formally deferred after hours of negotiations. The panel planned to reconvene later Tuesday after the Senate floor session.

The goal of proponents is to revise Ohio's constitution to prohibit amendments that deliver commercial economic benefits to individuals or monopolies.

The language affects 10 marijuana-growing sites described in ResponsibleOhio's legalization issue, some that already have private investors. If lawmakers act by Aug. 5, the two amendments could appear side-by-side on November's ballot. A legal showdown is already brewing over what that would mean. Experts say there's little precedent.

The House already approved the anti-monopoly measure and so must sign off on any Senate changes.
