A women-owned business awarded a state medical marijuana license today plans to open a dispensary in Syracuse at 2140 Erie Boulevard East.
The vacant storefront is on the south side of Erie Boulevard near Beattie Street between Sam's Collision Center and Fred's Sport Motors.
In addition to that location, Etain LLC of Westchester County will operate dispensaries in Albany, Ulster and Westchester counties. Etain will grow medical marijuana in Warren County.
Etain is a subsidiary of Peckham Industries, a 91-year-old family-owned road construction company. Etain is owned by Amy Peckham and her daughters Hillary and Keeley.
Hillary Peckham said her grandmother died of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) two years ago. A doctor had recommended medical marijuana for her, but it was not legally available, she said.
"We watched her decline and wanted to offer her an alternative, but it wasn't an option," Peckham said.
That experience sparked the Peckhams' interest in the medical marijuana industry.
Etain LLC is one of five businesses awarded licenses today by the state to grow and sell medical marijuana.
PharmaCann LLC and Bloomfield Industries, two other companies awarded medical marijuana licenses by the state, also plan to open dispensaries in Onondaga County. The state Health Department did not disclose the locations of those dispensaries and officials of those companies could not be reached for comment.
PharmaCann, based in Oak Park, Ill., has received approval in Illinois to operate two medical marijuana grow centers and four dispensaries.
