Health Canada Will Monitor Marijuana Advertisements

The Liberals are calling the Harper government's handling of marijuana an "unmitigated failure."

They dismissed yesterday's announcement by Health Minister Rona Ambrose that the government will crack down on groups that illegally advertise marijuana.

Ambrose and Health Canada issued a statement saying the government will begin actively monitoring marijuana advertising instead of acting mostly on the basis of complaints.

Under current law, only regulated parties such as licenced producers are allowed to advertise basic, non-promotional information.

Ambrose's pre-campaign statement made multiple references to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and described his stance on marijuana as "irresponsible."

She claims Trudeau's call to legalize marijuana will make it easier for youth to obtain the drug. But Liberal M-P Hedy Fry says the government's handling of the issue has been a bust.

She notes a 2013 UNICEF study found that Canada has the highest level of cannabis use among teenagers of all the countries in the developed world.
