The Arthritis Society has released a how-to guide for navigating Canada's changing landscape surrounding medical marijuana.
The national patient advocacy and research organization created "Medical Cannabis: A guide to access" and explanatory videos to help people with arthritis.
Although illegal marijuana shops can be found all over Vancouver, the guidelines advise patients to stick with the federally sanctioned system, which includes a doctor's approval and licensed mail-order suppliers.
The group says two out of three Canadians authorized to use medical cannabis under Health Canada's old rules – which until 2014 allowed users to grow their own – were doing so to manage arthritis pain.
There is increased interest in using cannabis for pain, but patients lack information, it says.
"This new resource helps prepare them so they can ask the right questions and make informed treatment choices," says Arthritis Society president and CEO Janet Yale in a news release.
In June, the Arthritis Society announced funding for a three-year study at Dalhousie University in Halifax into medical marijuana's pain-relieving potential.
