Colorado: Pro-Marijuana Activists Pull Back On Ballot Measure

Pro-marijuana activists campaigning to allow the drug to be used legally in adults-only businesses like nightclubs or bars said on Thursday they were withdrawing a ballot measure that would have put the issue before voters in Denver in November.

Activists said they were pulling the initiative because they believed they could reach a compromise with city officials and business groups that would result in local legislation to allow some limited social use of marijuana in Denver.

When Colorado voters in 2012 became the first in the nation, along with Washington State, to legalize marijuana for recreational use, they did so with a caveat: No public use.

But advocates said the restrictions on public use were too strict and had prohibited marijuana everywhere except private homes and a handful of marijuana-friendly bed-and-breakfasts scattered around the state.

The ballot proposal would have allowed people to eat edible marijuana or inhale vaporized forms of marijuana indoors, but would have relegated smoking to outdoor areas blocked from public view.

Organizers said that it was still too early to know what might be included in a compromise ordinance, and that if the effort stalled, they might reintroduce the ballot measure next year.

That might have been foolish to withdrawing the ballot measure before the compromise with city officials and business groups. But then again, this is Colorado and not Florida.
