Michelle Crawford hopes the public will take advantage of a meeting Saturday to learn about the benefits of medical marijuana.

A cannabis town hall meeting is scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 1:15 p.m., at the Mason County Health Department.

Michelle and her husband, Eric Crawford, have been working with state legislators for several years in an effort to get medical marijuana legalized. So far, the efforts haven't gotten the results the Crawfords would like.

Eric Crawford is a quadriplegic. He was was injured in a car accident in 1994 when he was 22 years old. Medical marijuana eases his pain from a number of medical conditions and diminishes his need for a number of drugs he would rather not rely on, the couple said earlier.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, medical cannabis can reduce deaths due to narcotic overdoes by 24 percent, Michelle Crawford said.

About 50 such meetings have been held across the state, Michelle Crawford said. More than 100 people have been at some of the meetings and provided great feedback on the issue, but she said she is not sure what kind of turnout to expect at Saturday's meeting.

According to Michell Crawford, the president of the Kentucky Nurses Association will be at the town hall meeting publicly endorsing medical cannabis.

Candidates for state representative 70th District John VanMeter and John Sims have been invited to attend, Michelle Crawford said. Kentucky State Senator Dan Seum will also be on hand for the meeting, she said. Eric Crawford will be one of the presenters.

The meeting is expected to last about 90 minutes, Michelle Crawford said.
