Traverse City - Northern Michigan nurses are being taught about the effects of cannabis in the human body.

Patients Out of Time held an event Sunday at the Northwestern Michigan College Hagerty Center in Traverse City to discuss the role of medicinal marijuana.

The organization focuses on educating healthcare professionals and the public about therapeutic cannabis.

The president of the organization said every part of the plant can be useful, and hopes to see it become more accessible.

"Cannabis works with the body," said Mary Lynn Mathre, Patients Out of Time President. "It's working with the system that controls the whole body. So it really helps balance everything, as opposed to, fix one thing here but at the same time put something else out of balance."

Mathre said she hopes the nurses left the event with more knowledge on how cannabis effects the body.

This is the first time they held this presentation and hope to make it an annual event.
