A Heflin man could face up to five years in prison if convicted of charges he grew marijuana in the Talladega National Forest.
A federal grand jury indicted Kenny Arbro Owen, 31, with the July 25 possession of marijuana plants found within the forest and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana. Charles Blake, a patrol captain for Alabama's national forests, said Monday the illegal growing of marijuana on forest property is common but dwindling as the popularity of methamphetamine increases. Blake said the Talladega National Forest near Talladega and Heflin is the most common spot where pot has been found, in comparison with other state forest land.
