Three people are facing charges after a scuffle with police at Hamilton's marijuana cafe. Two uniform officers entered Up in Smoke around 1:15 p.m. yesterday during a routine visit and noticed a patron smoking marijuana in a pipe.
The officers tried to arrest a man for possessing marijuana, but two other patrons allegedly stepped in and assaulted police. The officers called for backup when it looked like the situation was getting out of control and more people were trying to prevent the arrest. "It was one of those situations that blew up and you have everybody around screaming at you," said Acting Staff Sergeant Blake Easto. One patron ended up on the ground and was biting the curb, egging police on to step on his head, Easto said. No one was injured. One man was charged with simple possession and the other for obstructing police and creating a disturbance. A woman was charged with assaulting police and obstructing police.
