Trustees in Schaumburg are the latest to ban the sale of marijuana-flavored candy such as lollipops or gumdrops, following a similar Chicago ban and an investigation of the products by the Illinois attorney general's office.
Any business selling the candy in the northwest suburb will face a fine of up to $750 and possible revocation of its business license. The law was passed Tuesday and became effective immediately. Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan sent letters to Schaumburg and other municipalities earlier this summer to announce her office's investigation of the products, which taste like marijuana but don't contain THC, the ingredient that causes a high. Madigan investigated and subpoenaed a New Jersey-based company called ICUP Inc., which makes Pot Suckers, a marijuana-flavored lollipop. In a July letter to Madigan, the company announced it had decided to stop selling and distributing its candies. About the same time, a citizen complained to the village about such products, said Schaumburg Village Manager Ken Fritz. Village investigators found the Pot Suckers being sold at Spencer Gifts, a chain store that specializes in funky gadgets, home decor and clothing, in Woodfield Mall. A law banning the products seemed obvious, said George Dunham, the trustee who proposed the ordinance. "To me, products like these are designed to attract children to using the product, and it's a short step from using the fake product to using the real one," Dunham said. "I don't see a benefit from selling marijuana-flavored candy." A spokeswoman for Spencer Gifts said the Schaumburg store will abide by the law. Chicago passed a similar ban in late June. Lollipops...LOLLIPOPS!!! Are you seeing this people? Lollipops that don't even have THC in them...just "marijuana-flavored" lollipops. We're now down to banning candy. Your Edible Underwear are next because of some wack-ass feelings that it promotes promiscuity and unwanted pregnancies!
