Research commissioned by an Oireachtas committee has reportedly found that 300,000 young Irish people are regular users of cannabis.
Reports this morning said the study had found that most of those using cannabis are between the ages of 16 and 25, with 28,000 admitting to being dependent on the drug. Some 5,000 Irish 16-year-olds reportedly admit to using cannabis, twice the EU average. The findings are contained in a study due to published tomorrow by the Oireachtas committee on community, rural and Gaeltacht affairs. Ireland, traditionally, has higher drug rates than the rest of the EU. All drugs.
And the fact that so many say they are 'dependant' does nothing to help the cause. It helps further the false notion that marijuana is chemically addictive. When in fact, it is not. Edit: But the numbers are staggering. I don't think sheer "how many" numbers will play a major role in a fight to end marijuana prohibition, but they help. |
