Traffic Stop Garners 445 lbs. of Marijuana

A routine traffic stop Saturday near Russellville netted 445 pounds of packaged marijuana allegedly being transported across the United States by an illegal immigrant, according to a report from Arkansas State Police Sgt. Kyle Drown.

Drown stopped a 2006 Honda Ridgeline at about 8 a.m. driven by 51-year-old Martin Hinojosa at the 88-mile-marker of Interstate 40. Hinojosa told the officer he was on vacation and headed to Memphis, Tenn., then Montgomery, Ala., to see family and friends.

But after brief questioning of the suspect, Drown stated in his report Hinojosa admitted having illegal “pot” in his vehicle. Drown’s drug dog, Rudy, confirmed the suspect’s statement, leading Drown to the 19 packages of marijuana under a brown tarp in the truck bed.

The narcotics, recovered by 5th Judicial Drug Task Force agents, are reportedly worth nearly $450,000 in street value.

During a probable cause hearing for Hinojosa on Monday, District Judge Don Bourne ordered the suspect held on a $200,000 cash-only bond. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requested Hinojosa be held at the Pope County Detention Center pending an investigation.

Authorities stated Hinojosa has been deported in the past.
