Someone out there is probably looking high and low for their missing pot.

Good news: Just stop by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and ask for it. They want to do the right thing.

But hurry. The Sheriff’s Office will keep the drugs for 30 days or a little longer and then it's all going up in smoke, Sheriff’s Office Lt. Rex Blackburn said.

The marijuana — a little more than 28 pounds worth between $25,000 and $50,000 — was found over the weekend.

A group participating in Teen Challenge found 22.5 pounds of marijuana Saturday afternoon in white plastic trash bags along Blue Angel Parkway, a Sheriff’s Office report said. The teens were picking up trash.

About 6 pounds of marijuana was found later at the Teen Challenge center about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. It was in a yellow nylon bag in the rear of the center, a Sheriff’s Office report said.

After the discovery of the 6 pounds of pot, Charles Darren Gillespie, Teen Challenge’s assistant director, asked that a drug-sniffing dog be brought to the center, the report said.

“The K-9 search failed to locate any other marijuana,” the report said.

Gillespie did not want to discuss the marijuana when contacted Monday. He did say trash the teens collect is brought to the center and put in a large bin.

Blackburn, recalling a case from the 1980s, said he had an idea how the marijuana may have gotten on Blue Angel. Here is what happened in that case:

A man carrying ******* in his vehicle got spooked after seeing a law enforcement officer and tossed his *******.

Another man found the drugs and called deputies who left an anonymous note for the owner of the *******.

The owner returned to the area where he left the drugs, called the number on the note and the parties agreed to meet.

The man was arrested.

Blackburn said many guns and drugs that end up on roadways are probably thrown there by drug dealers and others criminals spooked by officers on routine patrol.
