Canada wants to decriminalize marijuana use to make smoking a joint north
of the border akin to a traffic-ticket offense. Naturally, the Bush administration considers this a grave threat to national security. After all, in America people are actually serving life sentences in prison for pot offenses, and the Justice Department wants to jail suppliers who give marijuana to terminal cancer patients to ease their suffering. Hence, a threat from Washington to begin intensive drug searches at the border - tying up traffic at major crossings - if Canada doesn't repent. "It's my job to protect Americans from dangerous threats," National Drug Control Policy director John P. Walters told The New York Times recently, "and right now, Canada is a dangerous staging area for some of the most dangerous marijuana." If Canada persists with this reefer decriminalization madness, the U.S. may have no recourse but armed invasion. President Bush can easily justify it on the grounds that Canadian potheads are stocking WMDs: Weapons of Mass Delusion.
