Pot At Marley Concert Outrages Activist

An anti-drug activist told an agency overseeing a Del Mar, Calif., fairground she was appalled to see abundant marijuana smoking at a Ziggy Marley concert.

Lisa Silverman, 49, a drug prevention specialist, told the 22nd District Agricultural Association she saw widespread marijuana use during a concert by the reggae star at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in August, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday.

"There were very few attendees who were not smoking marijuana," Silverman said.

Board members promised to investigate the matter and one official said the body may consider avoiding music groups that tend to attract pot smokers to their concerts.

"The ball is in their court," Tim Fennell, the fairgrounds' general manager, said of concert attendees. "Don't jeopardize the music you like by doing something improper."

Kenny Weissberg, a veteran San Diego concert promoter, said reggae, hip-hop and classic rock groups tend to attract the most marijuana smokers. He said keeping marijuana away from outdoor venues might not be a realistic goal.

"If people want to get high, they will get high no matter what the regulations are," he said.

Actually, when the pot-smokers said "You want something, lady?" they weren’t really offering her a hit, they just wanted to know why she was crawling around on all fours sniffing people’s belongings and blowing out their matches.

The board of directors was indeed stunned by Silverman’s story, given that they’d posted signs at every entrance reminding security not to let the notorious complainer and buzzkill, Lisa Silverman, into any more reggae concerts.

At a recent concert at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, hip-hop superstar Snoop Dogg concluded his set by urging listeners to "smoke some chronic," slang for high-grade marijuana.

"Almost immediately, you could see the plumes of smoke go up," Kelly said.

San Diego songwriter Steve Poltz said he remembers attending an outdoor concert featuring James Taylor when the mellow superstar caught a whiff of marijuana smoke.

"Ah, yes," Taylor mused. "The fine scent of herb being carried on the evening zephyr."

At which point someone shouted "Dork!" and Taylor was struck with a flying beer can, proving yet again why people shouldn’t be allowed to use marijuana in public.

Go figure!

I live in the area and the local papers covered this and the next day the letters to the editor were absolutely hilarious. One lady used drug overdose and marijuana in the same sentance. One guy was a part of a group thats mission was to "wipe out drug use among the public." and something makes me think that alcohol, tobacco and caffeine were not a part of his mission statement.

I like how large pro-legalization concerts draw thousands and there are no incidents with the poilce other than marijuana violations. In Seattle where marijuana is the lowest law enforcement priority there are no arrests for marijuana or otherwise during Hempfest this year. Can't say the samething about local football and baseball games where alcohol is served to attendees.

These prudes need to get the bugs out of their arseholes and the sand out of their virginias and live and let live.

I agree - it WAS definately the beer - I dont know many people who would do that stoned - anyway they threw a "BEER CAN" not a grinder or pipe so who ever said this was a weed related incident in the first place?
