A measure to make marijuana the lowest enforcement priority for the Hawaii County Police Department has won the vote of the public. In yesterday's 2008 general election, over 53 percent of the votes cast were in favor of the Peaceful Sky initiative, which was placed on the November ballot by a Hawaii County Council vote in August.
According to language in the ordinance introduced by council, the purpose of the article is to "provide law enforcement more time and resources to focus on more serious crimes", free up prison space and the court system, and "reduce the fear of prosecution and the stigma of criminality from non-violent citizens who harmlessly cultivate and/or use Cannabis for personal, medicinal, religious, and recreational purposes." 38% of the voting public voted against the measure. 8% of all Big Island voters left the ballot question blank. Great for us here> Or is it? Seems the Hawaii County Police Chief has stated last night on Channel 9 News that we do not follow what the people have voted in telling us what not to do in our jobs> only what is madated by the Federal Government, and we will enforce those laws: Aloha cuz, wake up and smell the buds brah!!! 53% of the people who live on Hawaii Island voted in favor for this ammendment.

Its funny cause the police are supposed to do what the people say, enforce the laws put there By the people, and yet when the people vote on and want something like this and it passes the police retreat under the federal umbrella saying it doesnt matter what the voters say. RIDICULOUS!

we have passed laws like this multiple times and nothing changed. In 2000 we voted to end green harvest yet those god damn helicopters are still flying around disturbing everybody for no reason. If the police are gonna say that they have to follow federal law and not state law then medical marijuana would not exist in this state. the police chief is just trying to act tough like he still has control over everything. Hopefully our votes will be heard this time.

"Police and Prosecutors have spoke out against the ballot measure, calling it a bad law that would be superseded by the federal government" as written in the " Hawaii Tribune Herald" November 5 2008.
One of the provisions of this ballot measure that passed overwhelmingly 53% to 38%, is that we are not to support the County Coucil of Hawaii receiving of federal or state tax dollars that are to be used for eradication of cannabis. Again, the people of the Big Island of Hawaii have voted and clearly stated that this is what was decided on. If the Police Chief or the Prosecuting Attorney " who oppose this ballot measure"keep being and saying that " we do not take orders from the people." Than by vote, both the Police Chief & the Prosecuting Attorney will be removed from office. By the people of Hawaii that have the power to do so. "How high do ya fly, when ya fly by?
