A reader writes:

"I'm getting tired of the self-congratulatory notes from potheads. Sure, probably marijuana should be legalized. But how is this issue a major priority? In a world where we have climate change, peak oil, species extinction, geopolitical instability, nuclear proliferation, economic collapse, religious extremism, not to mention the issues of education and health care to concern ourselves with, shouldn't we try to focus on things at that level first -- the really important things? Then stuff like gay marriage and the poor whiny pot smokers."

The first is one of the most basic civil rights enumerated in Constitutional history, and civil rights, in my book, are far more important than the economy. The second is a core freedom - the right to grow a frigging plant in your own backyard. For me, freedom is always primary. It is the core political value. The Dish will continue to cover the economy, climate change (my last column was on the subject), Iraq, Afghanistan, and all sorts of other issues. But the attacks on core freedoms in America are my priority and covering them is my prerogative. And I'm tired of hearing that the basic rights of Americans are unimportant - just because those Americans are gay or, God forbid, smoke a little weed.

Climate Change?...Hemp is the most efficient plant having more oxygen producing abilities. No pesticides needed, replenishes the soil, up to 3 crops a year in some areas, stops all logging world wide saving species of plants and animals..
Peak Oil?...Hemp makes 4x more fuel than corn or any other plant, we could be free from all fossil fuels..
Species Extinction?...Grow Hemp and stop logging saves animals..
Geo Political Instability?...All International and National laws banning M.J. are based on Lies causing mass histeria. Hemp is grown in all other countries perhaps because they accept that it produces less than a % of T.H.C.
Nuclear Proliferation?...Hemp fuel is very clean, we can get all our energy needs from technologies that we currently have in Wind, Solar, Tidal, Hemp fuels..
Economics?...Production of Hemp and M.J. would create millions of jobs and billions in tax revenue..
Religious Extreme?...This is a global issue that is outside the box of Hemp or M.J.. The only thing I can think of is the use of M.J. for spirituality could actually bring Peace to the World..
Education and Health?...Hemp and M.J. revenues would be available to better our Nations Health and Education Intitutions..

All of these points could be expanded ofcourse, but yeah, basically this post.

Marijuana can aid the world in such a more important way than just for those "whiney pot smokers". Marijuana could fix so many of the world's problems, if only it was used and produced at an global scale. So yes, we whiney stoners just want our herb free to smoke i guess, but if you look closer reader, it can help many of the issues you have brought to the table.

Guess u dont know the whole story: ill fill u in. "POTHEADS" as u like to call us, do care about things other than pot. Sorry to hear that you have been misinformed, but dont feel bad, there are alot of people who think like you do. i hope this thread has helped u

I agree with the "reader" quoted in the OP. MJ legalization is not as important as many other things. Not unimportant, less important.

On the other hand, its do-able. MJ legalization is less important than ending poverty, but its easier to achieve than the end of poverty.

it may not seem so important but you have to take into account that if cannabis was legal it might help out in other things like the economy. like killing two birds with one stone kinda thing...just a lot more birds.

we have brothers and sisters in jail. jail is a bad place where lots of bad things happen to people. we have families ripped apart. people die. because they use this harmless and healing plant.

its an important issue. a human rights issue. victimless Cannabis prisoners are political prisoners.
