Cannabis Cup & Sativa Cup Winner 2008

Our friends in Brazil have been raving at us about a special strain of sativa cannabis - indigenous to Brazil. After much cajoling and hunting, we got our hands on seeds.
Thus began a 3 year selection process. Infusing no other genetics, back-crossing selected plants with strong genetics in the same line to get the desired phenotypes stabilized. We were looking for something original, with power, volume and unique taste and flavor. Finally just two phenotypes were chosen to work with. Hardy high yielding plants, - mould and disease resistant, and most important the power, taste and flavor are indeed unique. The high has indeed a sense of utopia, long lasting cerebral and heavenly.
The High Times article also describes how they selected from over 3500 plants for the Mom.

Hello everyone!

Welcome aboard the Sub. Before I get rolling on the actual journal I just wanted to say hi to folks and get some handy info up here at the start where I(we) can find it later.

First to those who've been following along in the previous journal - thanks again and welcome to the new place. It uses much that I have learned from folks in this community.

For those that may be tuning in for the first time - welcome - and please speak up! In the past we've been fortunate enough to have lots of great convos and knowledge spread in the Sub - every person brings more.

All good stories need a beginning and an end, and that just doesn't work so well by definition with a "perpetual" garden. So in this journal we'll be following 12 clones from day 1 of cloning til they go in the jars to cure and we have a final weight.

6 Clones are the Utopia Haze. 6 are the Volde. More about both coming up in the Day 1 post.

Each strain will get its own SCROG.

All good stories need main characters, but they gotta have a good sub-plot (no pun intended) or two to make them interesting. So there are plenty of things going on in the Sub to talk about. I'll have pics of the scrog currently going as well as a few other plants in flower right now and there's always stuff to be upgraded on the room.

One of my goals this journal is to keep things running smoothly. That having been said, I will be putting finishing touches or upgrades on each area of the room before our star gals go in. They should get the ultra-deluxe treatment their entire lives.

Here are a few helpful charts,graphs and reference I use.

Key on Nutrient Disorders

To use the Problem-Solver, simply start at #1 below. When you think you've found the problem, read the Nutrients section to learn more about it. Diagnose carefully before making major changes.
1) a) If the problem affects only the bottom or middle of the plant go to #2.
b) If it affects only the top of the plant or the growing tips, skip to #10. If the problem seems to affect the entire plant equally, skip to #6.
2) a) Leaves are a uniform yellow or light green; leaves die & drop; growth is slow. Leaf margins are not curled-up noticeably. >> Nitrogen (N) deficiency.
b) If not, go to #3.
3) a) Margins of the leaves are turned up, and the tips may be twisted. Leaves are yellowing (and may turn brown), but the veins remain somewhat green. >> Magnesium (Mg) deficiency.
b) If not, go to #4.
4) a) Leaves are browning or yellowing. Yellow, brown, or necrotic (dead) patches, especially around the edges of the leaf, which may be curled. Plant may be too tall. >> Potassium (K) deficiency.
b) If not, keep reading...
5) a) Leaves are dark green or red/purple. Stems and petioles may have purple & red on them. Leaves may turn yellow or curl under. Leaf may drop easily. Growth may be slow and
leaves may be small. >> Phosphorous (P) deficiency.
b) If not, go to #6.
6) a) Tips of leaves are yellow, brown, or dead. Plant otherwise looks healthy & green. Stems may be soft >> Over-fertilization (especially N), over-watering, damaged roots, or
insufficient soil aeration (use more sand or perlite. Occasionally due to not enough N, P, or K.
b) If not, go to #7.
7) a) Leaves are curled under like a ram's horn, and are dark green, gray,
brown, or gold. >> Over-fertilization (too much N).
b) If not, go to #8...
8) a) The plant is wilted, even though the soil is moist. >>Over-fertilization, soggy soil, damaged roots, disease; copper deficiency (very unlikely).
b) If not, go to #9.
9) a) Plants won't flower, even though they get 12 hours of darkness for over 2 weeks. >> The night period is not completely dark. Too much nitrogen. Too much pruning or cloning.
b) If not, go to #10...
10) a) Leaves are yellow or white, but the veins are mostly green. >> Iron (Fe) deficiency.
b) If not, #11.
11) a) Leaves are light green or yellow beginning at the base, while the leaf
margins remain green. Necrotic spots may be between veins. Leaves are not twisted. >> Manganese (Mn) deficiency.
b) If not, #12.
12) a) Leaves are twisted. Otherwise, pretty much like #11. >> Zinc (Zn)
deficiency.
b) If not, #13.
13) a) Leaves twist, then turn brown or die. >> The lights are too close to the plant. Rarely, a Calcium (Ca) or Boron (B) deficiency.
b) If not... You may just have a weak plant.​

Cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBN...)


The Active Ingredients Of Cannabis


Cannabis products include marijuana, hashish, and hashish oil.
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) gets a user high, a larger THC content will produce a stronger high. Without THC you don't get high.
CBD (Cannabidiol) increases some of the effects of THC and decreases other effects of THC. High levels of THC and low levels of CBD contribute to a strong, clear headed, more energetic high.
Cannabis that has a high level of both THC and CBD will produce a strong head-stone that feels almost dreamlike. Cannabis that has low levels of THC and high levels of CBD produces more of a stoned feeling. The mind feels dull and the body feels tired.
CBN (Cannabinol) is produced as THC ages and breaks down, this process is known as oxidization. High levels of CBN tend to make the user feel messed up rather than high.
CBN levels can be kept to a minimum by storing cannabis products in a dark, cool, airtight environment. Marijuana should be dry prior to storage, and may have to be dried again after being stored somewhere that is humid.
THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) is found primarily in strains of African and Asian cannabis. THCV increases the speed and intensity of THC effects, but also causes the high to end sooner. Weed that smells strong (prior to smoking) might indicate a high level of THCV.
CBC (Cannabichromene) is probably not psychoactive in pure form but is thought to interact with THC to enhance the high.
CBL (Cannabicyclol) is a degradative product like CBN. Light converts CBC to CBL.
If you are a grower, you can experiment with different strains of cannabis to produce the various qualities you seek. A medical user looking for something with sleep inducing properties might want to produce a crop that has high levels of CBD.
Another user looking for a more energetic high will want to grow a strain that has high levels of THC and low levels of CBD. In general, Cannabis sativa has lower levels of CBD and higher levels of THC. Cannabis indica has higher amounts of CBD and lower amounts of THC than sativa. See marijuana strains.

Cannabis is unique in many ways. Of all plants, it is the only genus known to produce chemical substances known as herbal cannabinoids. These cannabinoids are the psychoactive ingredients of marijuana; they are what get you high, buzzed, or stoned. By 1974, there were 37 naturally occurring cannabinoids that had been discovered.
There are 3 types of cannabinoids:
--- Herbal: occur naturally only in the cannabis plant
--- Endogenous: occur naturally in humans and other animals
--- Synthetic: cannabinoids produced in a lab
Most of the cannabinoids appear in very small amounts (less than .01 percent of total cannabinoids) and are not considered psychoactive, or else not important to the high. Many are simply homologues or analogues (similar structure or function) to the few major cannabinoids which are listed.
There are several numbering systems used for cannabinoids. The system used here is based on formal chemical rules for numbering pyran compounds (any of a class of organic compounds of the heterocyclic series in which five carbon atoms and one oxygen atom are present in a ring structure). Another common system is used more by Europeans and is based on a monoterpenoid system which is more useful considering the biogenesis of the compound.

Tetrahydrocannabinol - THC

Delta 9-trans-tetrahydrocannabinol - delta-9 THC is the main psychotomimetic (mindbending) ingredient of marijuana. Estimates state that 70 to 100 percent of the marijuana high results from the delta-9 THC present. It occurs in almost all cannabis in concentrations that vary from traces to about 95 percent of all the cannabinoids in the sample.
In very potent strains, carefully prepared marijuana can be 30 percent delta-9 THC by dry weight (seeds and stems removed from flowering buds). Buds are the popular name given to masses of female flowers that form distinct clusters.
Delta 8-trans-tetrahydrocannabinol - delta-8 THC is reported in low concentration, less than one percent of the delta-9 THC present. Its activity is slightly less than that of delta-9 THC. It may be an artefact of the extraction/analysis process. Almost everyone who uses the term THC, refers to delta-9 THC and delta-8 THC combined, as THC.

Cannabidiol - CBD

Cannabidiol - CBD also occurs in almost all strains. Concentration range from none, to about 95 percent of the total cannabinoids present. THC and CBD are the two most abundant naturally occurring cannabinoids. CBD is not psychotomimetic in the pure form, although it does have sedative, analgesic, and antibiotic properties.
In order for CBD to affect the high, THC must be present in quantities ordinarily psychoactive. CBD can contribute to the high by interacting with THC to potentiate (enhance) or antagonize (interfere or lessen) certain qualities of the high.
CBD appears to potentiate the depressant effects of THC and antagonize is excitatory effects. CBD also delays the onset of the high but can make it last considerably longer (as much as twice as long). The kind of grass that takes a while to come on but keeps coming on.
Opinions are conflicting as to whether it increases or decreases the intensity of the high, intensity and high being difficult to define. Terms such as knock-out or sleepy, dreamlike, or melancholic are often used to describe the high from grass with sizeable proportions of CBD and THC.
When only small amounts of THC are present with high proportions of CBD, the high is more of a buzz, and the mind feels dull and the body de-energized.

Cannabinol - CBN

Cannabinol - CBN is not produced by the plant per se. It is the degradation (oxidative) product of THC. Fresh samples of marijuana contain very little CBN but curing, poor storage, or processing such as when making hashish, can cause much of the THC to be oxidized to CBN. Pure forms of CBN have at most 10 percent of the psychoactivity of THC.
Like CBD, it is suspected of potentiating certain aspects of the high, although so far these effects appear to be slight. CBN seems to potentiate THC's disorienting qualities. One may feel more dizzy or drugged or generally messed up but not necessarily higher.
In fact, with a high proportion of CBN, the high may start well but feels as if it never quite reaches its peak, and when coming down one feels tired or sleepy. High CBN in homegrown grass is not desirable since it represents a loss of 90 percent of the psychoactivity of its precursor THC.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin - THCV

Tetrahydrocannabivarin - THCV or THV is the propyl homologue of THC. In the aromatic ring the usual five-carbon pentyl is replaced by a short three-carbon propyl chain. The propyl cannabinoids have so far been found in some strains originating from Southeast and Central Asia and parts of Africa.
In one study, THCV made up to 48.23 percent (Afghanistan strain) and 53.69 percent (South Africa) of the cannabinoids found. We've seen no reports on its activity in humans. From animal studies it appears to be much faster in onset and quicker to dissipate than THC. It may be the constituent of one or two toke grass, but its activity appears to be somewhat less than that of THC. Some people use the term THC to refer collectively to delta-9 THC, delta-8 THC, and THCV.
An interesting note is that people who have a prescription for Marinol (synthetic medical THC) may be tested for THCV. Marinol contains no THCV, if a person tests positive it means they have been using marijuana, or another cannabis product. This is usually sufficient grounds to terminate the prescription of a person who has signed a contract not to ingest any cannabis while taking Marinol.

Cannabichromene - CBC

Cannabichromene - CBC is another major cannabinoid, although it is found in smaller concentrations than CBD and THC. It was previously believed that is was a minor constituent, but more exacting analysis showed that the compound often reported as CBD may actually be CBC.
Relative to THC and CBD, its concentration in the plants is low, probably not exceeding 20 percent of total cannabinoids. CBC is believed not to be psychotomimetic in humans; however, its presence in plants is purportedly very potent has led to the suspicion that it may be interacting with THC to enhance the high.

Cannabicyclol - CBL

Cannabicyclol (CBL) is a degradative product like CBN. During extraction, light converts CBC to CBL. There are no reports on its activity in humans, and it is found in small amounts, if at all, in fresh plant material.

Cannabinoids And The High

The marijuana high is a complex experience. It involves a wide range of psychical, physical, and emotional responses. The high is a subjective experience based in the individual and one's personality, mood, disposition, and experience with the drug.
Given the person, the intensity of the high depends primarily on the amount of THC present in the marijuana. Delta-9 THC is the main ingredient of marijuana and must be present in sufficient quantities for a good marijuana high.
People who smoke grass that has very little cannabinoids other than delta-9 THC usually report that the high is very intense. Most people that don't smoke daily will feel something from a joint having delta-9 THC of 3 percent concentration to material.
Cannabis products having a THC concentration of 5-10 percent would be considered good, 10-25 percent would be considered very good, and over 25 percent would be excellent quality by daily users standards. In general, we use potency to mean the sum effects of the cannabinoids and the overall high induced.
Marijuana is sometimes rated more potent than the content of delta-9 THC alone would suggest. It also elicits qualitatively different highs. The reasons for this have not been sorted out. Few clinical studies with known combinations of several cannabinoids have been undertaken with human subjects.
So far, different highs and possibly higher potency seem to be due to the interaction of delta-9 THC and other cannabinoids (THCV,CBD,CBN, and possibly CBC). Except for THCV, in the pure form, these other cannabinoids do not have much psychoactivity.
Another possibility for higher potency is that homologues of delta-9 THC with longer side chains at C-3 (and higher activity) might be found in certain marijuana strains.
Compounds with longer side chains have been made in laboratories and their activity is sometimes much higher, with estimates over 500 times that of natural delta-9 THC.
The possibility that there are non-cannabinoids that are psychoactive or interacting with the cannabinoids has not been investigated in detail. Non-cannabinoids with biological activity have been isolated from the plants, but only in very small quantities.
None are known to be psychotomimetic. However, they may contribute to the overall experience in non-mental ways, such as the stimulation of the appetite.
Different blends of cannabinoids account for the different qualities of intoxication produced by different strains of cannabis. The intensity of the high depends primarily on the amount of delta-9 THC present and on the method of ingestion.
A complex drug such as marijuana affects the mind and body in many ways. Sorting out what accounts for what response can become quite complex.​

Day 1

Before we get to the actual clones, lets talk about the strains. They both have some great stories behind them. We're starting with some great genetics here.

Utopia Haze
I am perhaps most excited by the Utopia Haze. Her mom won First in the Indica Cup and Second overall at the Cannabis Cup. It took me forever to finally acquire the seeds. I did lots (and I mean LOTS!) of research on different strains. And it was an article in the printed version of HT that got me. There was a great pic of a bud and the story. What finally got me was that the mom was selected from over 3500 plants! And so far it shows. This is about as stable and uniform a strain as I've seen. The only downside is that long flowering period. But believe it or not, they now have one that goes 14-16 weeks in flower!

Volde
Not only did she win the Sativa Cup, but the Volde has an interesting back story as well. The breeders at Barney's have been male since they started. After a decade, there were a few ladies at the Farm who were allowed to start breeding. This is their creation. Not sure if it was their first. It, unfortunately, does show some need for stabilization, as there was significant variety in each plant. The strain description says,"with a little care..." That's a great way to describe every OTHER plant I have. Volde requires the grower to maintain near zero fluctuation in pH and nutes. She has a very small range where she's healthy.

Ok - now for the clones. While I want simple and straight forward and no hiccups, I could not resist one final test. So half the clones are in ideal conditions in rockwool, and half are in my 2x4 tray. The reason for this is because if it really works as well as it did last time, this will save me the need to add another cloning station and/or light.

The perpetual nature of the garden, and the fact I like to grow different strains means I need to have some flexibility in when and how many plants go through each group.

I expect the rockwool to go a little faster. Its an oldie but a goodie as far as cloning methods. But if the tray does indeed provide overflow space with $0 additional cost then that's obviously really good. Down the road I would like to eliminate rockwool entirely, and I think the EZ-Cloner will be the answer. But if this works as expected, it will make it very difficult to justify the $ to upgrade any time soon.

Now then - the moms. The moms are Clones from plants I grew from seed and are now flowering in the scrog. So I guess you could say they are second generation clones. There is lots of debate about whether a clone of a clone loses potency. I don't think they do unless you grow them badly. A clone is an exact snapshot of its mother. If the mother is healthy and has always been healthy and the genetics of the strain say there will be x amt of THC - then there will be x amt of thc in the mom and the clone. If you stress them or take them prematurely I could see weakening the strain, but if done right, I think it can only make the clones better. They adapt to the environment.

It helps me to remember that a 1 week old clone of a 6 week old plant is really a 7 week old plant with no roots.

Step 1 - Pre-Soak the cubes. Olivia's, Liquid Karma and Hygrozyme. pH balanced to 5.5. I let them soak about 45 minutes to an hour. While the cubes soak I do the labels and put a little cloning gel in the shot glass.


While I was waiting I also transplanted the future Dog Hair mom to Pro-Mix.




The process is straight forward for both mediums. Snip. Clip. Dip. Plant.




A friend has gotten permission from his wife to grow ONE and only one plant on the outskirts of their farm. So he wants a tree. Hopefully this will be a good start - the top of the Utopia Haze mom - no roots yet and straight into Pro-Mix. I hope she takes:

Wow! This is awesome to see so many friendly faces! Thanks for all the great encouragement. The lights are still off down there but everything seems just peachy.

The UH top is certainly struggling, but I'm misting her a few times a day and she seems to be holding temporarily. I was trying to think of something to use as a dome - unfortunately she's bigger than a 2 litre. Definitely the right idea though. Nothing has come to mind yet that is big enough and clear.

That's about it for now. Prolly gonna make some hash this afternoon. Hopefully it'll be ready for the Lakers game tonight. Go Lakers!

Hey Im in for this one too. Like how you condensed all the info at the beginning. excellent method for averting lots of newB questions and helpful for them if they are starting out.

Any chance youll be working on your controller or is it a dead project now?

Hey Im in for this one too. Like how you condensed all the info at the beginning. excellent method for averting lots of newB questions and helpful for them if they are starting out.

Any chance youll be working on your controller or is it a dead project now?

Hiya! Thanks for joining us. Yubb, I will continue on the controller. There is also another member here who is working on a similar project. I promised him I would get a list of features together, and I've been working on it. I don't want to talk about his stuff, but I can tell you what I'm doing and will be doing.

Basically I am not super happy with the CHHC-1. It does indeed work as advertised, but it is a very brute force controller and has very little real fuzzy logic.

There are others out there that seem like they are better. But they cost about $1200-1500 vs the $510 I spent on this one. The CHHC-1 is very good - don't get me wrong - and until something better comes along at the same price, I would buy it again if needed.

I have yet to see a really nice controller setup for a small to medium sized setup. Especially one that could work with two rooms. I think there are more and more folks every day doing med grows that need a controller. A home PC costs a few hundred dollars nowadays and has far more processing power and features than a grow room controller. It is RIDICULOUS the prices these guys are getting.

So, yes - as time permits I will be working on the controller. There is more room down there now, and a work bench (not in the pics).

I want one for the Veg and one for the Flower room. So I'll use the CHHC-1 for the flower room and to control the CO2. I'll build one for the Veg room without CO2, but more control over temp, humidity, and lights. I'm not promising any super quick time frame, but I DO feel like I have a good shot at actually getting something working this time.
